Hi everyone,

I have two aracarnas. Ever since we got them (january 14) one has had constant diaorreha, and wasnt gaining any weight, so we seperated the two aracarna away from the other chicks to help build them up. The one aracarna now has a very smelly back end, with what looks like cottage cheese on all her feathers at the back! discusting i know! We took her to the vets and she has been given antibiotics, shes been on them 5 days, the diaorreha has still not stopped, nor has the white stuff gone. I have just been outside to check on her and the other aracarna was quite viciouslly attacking her vent, and has made her bleed quite bad Iver seperated them now. Do you think I need a trip back to the vets? Since we have had her she has never been right, and now with her frined attaking her, I am stuck with what to do!!

I am rather surprised that the vet is treating what sounds like vent gleet with an antibiotic. An antibiotic would just make that particular problem worse. Are you sure it is not an antifungal agent?

As far as the pecking goes- Keep her and her friend away from each other until the wounds are healed. I think you may be able to clean the wounds up on your own, but if you aren't comfortable with that then I would bring her back to the vet. Everyone has differing ideas on how to clean out wounds, but this bird has a filthy backside anyways, so I would give her a complete bath. Lots of soap and water. Once you get her all cleaned up dry her off with a blowdryer on a low setting. Once you have done that see what her butt looks like then. From there you can decide if she needs a vet or not. If not, goo her up with some plain Neosporin.
