Araucana thread anyone?

Lanae,
The coolest thing about selling a bunch is having room to buy more isn't it?

I'm planning to sell my Degas/Slinky cockerel. I'll have some more to sell this spring when they start feathering out. I could sell them now but I'm dying to see what they feather out like and to be able to sex them. I'll probably keep any pullets from Slinky, they're all rumpless and gorgeous big chicks. One of the hens I just bought is laying gorgeous big eggs like Slinky's and I have one in the incubator now but doubtful it's good since the temps have been soo cold and I can't pick them up till after work in the evenings but I "will" have some chicks from those pretty eggs

I'm really hoping they're from the red/brown hen, she is really super nice and the rooster she's with now is that cool BBR rooster with the huge tufts. I'll definitely have some good chicks to sell/trade this summer.

Village Chicken,

Any chance you have Oyster Shells? I had a hen once that would lay an egg and immediately get up and blast the egg, Jocelyn was the one that told me she could be lacking Calcium and to give her plenty of Oyster shells daily, so that was what I did, and it worked for my hen, so just thought I'd let you know to try some Oyster shells daily for a while and see if that makes a difference, possibly too blocking that nest area that is hard for you to get to may help in the future, I think I'd block it anywas as that's where they destroyed the first egg at. Hope it helps.

here is one of my little bantam roo's I hatch from my breeding. I can't wait to see how he finishes coloring out. I am keeping him for sure. I have about 50 I will be selling soon. They range from late Nov to Jan hatchings. also planning on selling some of the 1 yr old splash tufted hens I bought to breed tufts. I have to many of them. Didn't know he was going to send me 6 all the same color ugh. But I got tufts and that's what counts

I'm taking a stab at the ones with the black combs, from what I can see of your picture it looks like the facial skin has red to it, some birds that have the black facial features are considered gypsy faced which I don't know if that is really desirable or not, the other thing about the black comb showing up could possibly be Rapanui blood in the breedings somewhere, the other issue with any bird that has a black comb is that it indicates a lack of circulation (respritory) I have one hen that has black facial features myself and her comb is red with a dark tinge to it, and that is her natural color, I put her on Denagard for 7 days straight and the face and comb color didn't change, she also doesn't have any respritory symptoms at all, no sneezing, no drainage, no wattery eyes, no respritory symptoms at all, I treated her a couple of times to make sure the color was infact her natural coloring. Usually when a birds comb goes black that has had a red comb it's not good and most times the bird dies, I don't know what you have in your medicine chest for birds with respritory but I think I'd consider treating those that have the black combs to see if the comb changes color. I have a Bantam Black Copper Marans Hen, 2 of them infact, and I knew prior to getting them that the woman had respritory in her flock, so I sent Denagard to mixed in the water for the transporting of them, the driver took the water and the woman threw fruit into the cage with the hens, when I got them both birds combs showed black, the one was just at the tips of the comb, the other hens comb was completely black, which scared me, I caged both of them and put them on dosages of Denagard, the one hens comb with the shading of black came clean of the black within 2 days, the other hens comb stayed black past 7 days of treatment with only the part closest to the head coming to color, so I took a 10 day break and then did another 7 days of treatment, in the next 10 day break the comb came clean of black up to the very tips of the comb, I did another 7 days and broke for 10 and that was what it took to get her comb completely rid of the black and colored like it was supposed to be in the first place, the only symptom I had was a sneeze from the hen the first day after that there were no symptoms. Just thought I'd mention what I think of when you say a black comb and then show it. Hope I'm helping. They look like good weighted chicks from the pictures and the tufts look good. Where did they come from?

I hatched them from my birds with new tufted birds got. They are not sick. They have never set foot on the ground yet. They are in cages inside my Temperature controlled Florida Room. They are on lg pine shaving changed every other day and fresh food and water daily and just started giving them some banana and chopped apple for treats. All the other black chicks have red combs, just these 2 are black and have been since the developed them

Where did you get your tufted birds that you used for breeding to your birds from?

I'd just keep a tight eye on them, they may be Gypsy faced or have Rapanui in the breedings. I just know that when I get a bird that has black I make sure the color won't change, and I've had it not change and then like I told you about my Bantam Black Copper Marans hen it did change, and I wasn't trying to scare you, I was just letting you know honestly what I do.

As far as having them on the ground that doesn't matter in regard to diseases as some things are passed in the eggs, just watch them and see how they develope, they have really pretty tufts, and I like the coloring too of the first bird you showed, I'd keep that one for sure, he's so unusual.

Exoticduckluvr, Donna your chickens are really nice! Looked at the photos on your web-site as well. You do a great job with a camera too! I have a rumpless, CF hen the exact color of your Lacey. Do you know what the correct name of that color is? It is one of my favorite colors of all my hens. You have produced some nice tufts as well.

all my non tufted birds came from Ann Charles as day old chicks and 2 different people in Fl I bought and hatched eggs from. One batch is Ann Charles x Allen Stanford breeding but they haven't laid yet. My Tufted birds came from a guy in Mass. and are out of Bobbi Porto lines
