Araucana thread anyone?

Actually she is a BBR with the columbian restrictor having two copies of gold. I also have a gold duckwing ( having 1 copy of gold) with a columbian restrictor and she is a lighter red, less brown. Like I said I call them ginger red because that is the look of the color. And it is the look of the color I am going for like my earlier posts have said.

I have several chicks that look promising. The color is similar to a Rhode Island Red with more shine to it or fire when the sun shines on it.

Illia,
Lol, no, no pecking caused this. I doubt chicks would have been that thorough anyway, lol. Looks like he got a bad haircut though doesn't it? It is sort of weird but he's such a neat lil chick otherwise. I'll let him grow up and see what he turns out like. I'm hoping he ends up a nice solid black cockerel, I have some nice black hens for him and more black chicks so actually, if any of them turn out a cockerel, that will be good. I have 2 tufted hens so if Monkey is a pullet that would be fine but I'm thinking cockerel.

He hatched looking like this. I'd swear his down got stuck in the shell but nope. lol I always prefer classic "perfect" chicks but heck he's cute.

That's not a chick, it's the ugly duckling! LOL, he is cute and does have a boyish look. Sometimes I have chicks hatch in the bator who's down sticks to the shell and they come out with bald spots. Monkey looks like he's growing quills for real feathers so he shouldn't end up bald. Lanae's Minnie had an embarrasingly bald butt as a chick.

I filled my incubator yesterday, a few are araucana eggs. I am unable to tell some of my blue eggs from the araXamerau mixes I still have running around. I need their new owner to come and get them so I can get serious about hatching!

so my beltsville turkeys that i was incubating with my araucanas are hatching 3 days early... imagine my surprise when i opened the door to move them to the hatcher and they were peeping at me.... my worry is that the temp was high and my araucanas will be early... but i dont know for sure as the temp was at worst 101... now i dont know when to move them.... they are due to be moved on thursday and hatch on saturday

They are safe to move now if you want. By day 14 they have their down and will no longer have the possibility of sticking to the sides of the egg, so they don't need to be turned. I usually move mine a day or two early just in case the temp was wonky. Just make sure the hatcher is up and running and the humidity is good.

Hatching has BEGUN! Officially the hatch date is tomorrow, but before I left for work this morning there were 6 eggs pipped already! Who knows, I might have some little Araucana fluffballs bouncing around the incubator sometime tonight!

Hey, I have some hatching now too. They were supposed to hatch tomorrow as well so maybe there's just something in the air.....like spring

These are the ones I bought from a breeder whose Araucana's came from Nancy Utterbecks lines. Of 14 eggs, 8 candled good at 14 days. The first one is "out" and this one is chipmunk striped. Still pretty wet and I'm just peeking through the window so I can't tell if it's tufted. There's another one pipped. I'll leave them all in the hatcher till late tomorrow in case some of them decided to follow the rules and hatch tomorrow. This one is a nice, big chick and very active, only took an hour or so from pipping to hatch out. The eggs were good color too.

I have been having a "Lot" of dead in the shell chicks the past 2 groups and so I'd know for myself, I peeled them out and they were all double tufted so I'm going to have to segregate into at least 2 pens so the tufted roos will be with non tufted chicks and vice versa. I didn't think it was going to be a problem but when you set a lot of eggs ( a lot for me anyway) and so many have the lethal gene (most would pip then die or die the last few days before hatching) then it's a huge waste of time and space in the incubator besides the heartache of them dying. I do have another chain link dog pen but I'm going to have to make do on a shelter. At least it's warm now and shouldn't be any bitter cold. I might be able to set it up in the barn and put a tarp over it for now. The floor there is concrete but I can put down pine shavings, I'd rather put them outside though, I guess I could tarp the pen and give them a dog house to lay in and put a makeshift roost in it. My husband is making me some new nest boxes so I may as well tell him to double the order.

edited to add another is pipped
