I know what you mean - I have never shown a chicken before because I just couldn't stand the thought of putting them through all that. Not to mention having to separate them out from the flock for a few weeks after we get home. Yuck.
My son has entered his beloved Easter Egger "Babbs" in the kiddy poultry "mixed breeds" section, but we'll see if he's able to go through with it in the end. He was asking me if I thought Babbs would be sad to leave all her friends and he keeps asking me if I am sure that the "fair people" will let us take her home again when it's all over. He's torn between his desire to show off his favorite chicken and his worry that she will be unhappy or taken from us. Bless his heart.

Your son sounds like a young gentleman. You should be very proud.

That is my fear. I go to the fair shows and 1/2 the chickens are sick. I couldn't bring one of my best birds there fearing that they would get sick. I am holding ont o a few extras that if I entered them I would try to sell afterwards. I don't think I could feel comfortable bringing them back home.

No shows for my stunning birds. I LOVE to go see the chickens, but I can't have mine away from me!

Also Nancy is VERY proud and she doesn't want to know about prettier hens. She also demands that her admirers come see her in her home, none of this her traveling business.

My other two are just followers, According to the girls it's all about Nancy here.

Being new to chickens I have never been to a show or paid attention to exhibits at the fair. But last week I went to a "heritage fair" here specifically to see the chickens. All I could think about was those poor chickens panting away in those tiny cages in that hot barn for 4 days while mine are playing in the shade.

I have a question??? This spring, i spoke with a guy that had 6 araucana hens that were 1 1/2 years old. He said one of them had been tufted but the others kept them picked off. He was unable to tell which one it was so I did not go buy any. Now that I know a little more about them, how easy would it have been to spot the tufted hen that had her tufts plucked? What do you look for? Does anyone have any good photos that would show a plucked tufts so that a newbe could spot the real deal? I am sure it happens often so there's a good chance it may come up again. I was also worried that at1 1/2 yrs old, they may not be very productive. So another question is how old before they slow way down on the eggs and would you hesitate to buy hens aproaching 2 yrs?

Out of Canaan's six eggs, three hatched. I opened the other three and it was like a snapshot of chick development. One egg must have stopped at maybe 10 days, the next 15 and the last was fully formed with large white tufts. I did get one rumpless with little tufts and two clean faced and tailed. I will post pictures in a week or so to make sure they make it.

Man do I wish we had a nearby Heirloom Expo out here. . . I've got SO many heirloom tomatoes, melons, watermelons, mexican corn varieties, peppers, and so on to bring as well as some of my very unique chicken breeds like the Shamos and Araucanas

Although they're technically not "heritage" to our US standard because of their admittance to the APA, they're older than people think.

Illia, you mean up there, cause I am out here also. LOL!!!

Baker Creek Seeds is putting this on. I am so excited. Fortunately it is only about 1.5 hrs from my house, so it is do-able to drive every day. The bad thing is it is during the week instead of a weekend, which is weird.

Rumbull,

It can be near impossible to tell a tufted bird when its tufts have been picked out. On a very few they will have a flap of skin that the tuft hangs off of ( peduncle ), but of the 30 odd tufted birds I have here, only two have that.
