Araucana thread anyone?

Lanae, was Terry Reeder judging at the Stockton show? Did he have any black Araucana to show?
So glad that you were there to represent the breed!!

I was determined to get to that show this year, but our big fire sort of put a kink in, well, everything....... Next year I will be there!!

You are welcome to eggs from my birds, but like I just said, the color is pretty pathetic. I can always send you eggs and then you can decide if they just look too green to put out as a representation of Araucana. Of course, I hope to improve that issue this season, so we shall see......

SHanshan, that baby is gorgeous.

I talked to Terry but don't think he was judging, not sure though. He did have a black bantam in the show. There were some very beautiful bantam araucana there. Cindy Smith also had a georgous white large fowl hen that I would love to talk her out of. I forgot my camera in the rush to get loaded in the car. I am hoping Dan Wake took photos, he usually does. I know Cindy took a photo of the booth. I hope I managed to gently sidestep out of the frame in time, but was talking to someone.

I didn't see very many araucana people. They probably didn't know where the table was. Next year I will have this better planned out.

That last picture is perfect. Talk about a serious case of the stink eye. LOL!

So I came home tonight to find my Dickeys hatcher had given me 6 chicks out of 8 eggs set. I am happy. Of the two eggs that didn't hatch, 1 was tufted and died a couple of days ago, the other one was cleanfaced, yolk fully absorbed but a truly huge chick. I have not seen one so big. It was crammed in the shell and I don't think there was room for it to move around to hatch.

Out of the 6 chicks 3 were tufted with two being nicely double tufted, they both appear to be black based and I am thinking birchen esque by the color, so I have taken notes, banded them and can't wait to see what grows into what.

1 is solid back with a black face and black feet - single tufted, two are chipmonk.

Only 1 tailed chick in the bunch and I new it probably would be. It is out of a tailed BBR pullet that was in a grow out pen with my red rumpless roo. I set her eggs just to see the color I would get.

So I am officially in love with my new incubation set up.

I have a single egg in the hatcher out of Shirley, my tailed/clean faced duckwing hen. She has always been fine out in the coop then one day I thought I'd move her to the black pen for a while.....big mistake. Those black hens beat the daylights out of her. I kept her in the garage and pampered her for a month before she was well enough to move back out to her original coop and "they" also beat her up. She is so timid now that I worry about her, she's like a whipped pup, poor thing. She's become a mamma's baby and I thought I could let her free range but "those" hens and the roosters were mean to her so she actually would come up on the porch and beg to be let inside! OMG, what in the world was I going to do with this hen???? LOL

So, I tried one more time and put her in the breeding pen with India, her daughter (a double tufted black pullet) and Cracker Jack. She was chased and picked on for a few days but I think she's actually found her a small group that she can bond with again. I hope she gains more confidence, she comes out on me wanting to be held so I hold her a little and pet her and tell her what a good hen she is and she seems okay. The feathers are coming back in fine and she's eating and drinking fine. This egg was one she laid when I had her with the free rangers so I have no clue who the dad is to the chick. It's due to hatch tomorrow and I candled it to see if it was still moving and the head is above the air sac so I expect there will be some pipping going on tonight. I hope all goes well. I work tomorrow but 8 am -6:30 pm so I hope it hatches before I leave in the morning. I'll post progress after work tomorrow.

Poor Shirley,

The two girls I got from you are settled in well. I put a roo in with them last friday so I will hopefully have some fertile eggs soon. I have a couple other hens in with them. One is my tufted wheaten hen. She hates everyone. She growls anytime the other chickens come near her. She is my favorite because she is so contrary. She doesn't mind roos, its just other hens she doesn't like.

Lanae,
Thanks for that. Shirley still acts shy in with the other 2 hens and Cracker Jack but they aren't hurting her so I'm leaving her there, hoping she will get her confidence back. She was such a confident hen before, man....there is so much that happens within a flock isn't there??

The egg hatched this evening. Nice "Big" duckwing chick. I'm not good at telling silver from gold but this chick isn't the golden brown chipmunk chick, it's paler and less "color" to it but the stripes seem like they're going to be boldly colored. Right now, it's still pretty wet so I'll know more tomorrow and post photo's when it's fluffed up. I hope it's a pullet. Shirley has a tail but this chick is definitely rumpless. No telling who the dad is, hoping it was Jokers baby
