Araucana thread anyone?

Seriously though - if these were normal hatch rates and tuft rates, then Araucanas would be one of the most popular breeds out there. They have so much going for them and then you "hit the wall" of their miserable fertility issues and that's where so many people give up.
That's just such an awesome hatch!!!

Personally I've only had fertility issues with one pair, otherwise it's usually very nice here, I think the big scare is in the lethal thing, the fact that shipped eggs (most of your Araucana sources) are extremely risky, and then there's the high dislike for rumpless birds. People just aren't open to different things or worthy challenges.

Megan, I'll really be bragging in a couple more weeks if that hatch is as productive and tufted as this one. I sent 3 dozen eggs to my son's fiancee's brothers to his commercial incubator. He owed me some hatching for some Cochin hens I swapped to him. In theory, they should be as good since they all came from the same pen. That would put it over the top here if I got that lucky. I am anticipating some very nice breeders for next year.

Here are the 2 latest hatched, still damp but they will be fluffy and ready for the brooder by tomorrow after work

I'm in Ohio, so it depends on where in Indiana. Where do all of us hail from?
Some have it listed in their signature, others don't.

I am really close to Glencoe, Ky. I can cross the bridge and be in Indiana in about 15to minutes. Where in Indiana are they from?

A few of you know where I am from. I am from amazing Eastern Washington. Don't think typical wet/rainy/nerdy Seattle style Washington, think more North Idaho.

I got some eggs from Coberdor recently and I tried to candle them last night. It looks like there are maybe 4 of the 29 that might not be developing but the eggs were darker so I couldn't be sure. I was thrilled by the egg color of them and I can't wait to see how many hatch and what colors I get.

That's good to hear. Let's hop they all continue to develop. I got lots of tufts in my last hatch, so good luck. My recent hatch from shipped eggs from Illia was not as successful. 8 of the dozen started to develop, but only three hatched. The others were quitters and 3 looked like it was an air sac that had burst. That's what happens in the post. I think if we get a 50% hatch rate from shipped eggs, we're doing well. Hopefully, with that any you'll get at least a dozen chicks. :D

3 out of 8? Well that's a let-down.

8 would have been pretty nice. . . Do tell me their colors though! If you got any blues with a yellow face or any form of striped, you've got some Marango-colors in there.

This week I have shipped out 20 birds and chicks to various people. I am slowly getting down to just what I want to keep. I have 4-H poultry division coming to do a tour of the farm today which is exciting. I gotto go out and mow, so it looks like a give a crap. LOL!

I have two new spotted geese babies. They are 1 month old and giant. I am totally in love. They come running when I call them. Their names are Duck Duck and Grey. One name is for my childhoood and 1 is for the adult in me. LOL! When I sit on the grass they come over and lay their heads on me and take a nap. They love to talk and are just adorable. When they run they raise their goofy featherless wings in the air and waddle really fast. So funny to see.

Hope everyone is doing well.
