Araucana thread anyone?

The moth
Note on the happening of this: all of my chickens are rescues of some kind and no two are the same breed, so actual "breeding" doesn't happen much here. I get what I get, but the parents are attractive and healthy, so I'm sure it will be a beautiful little easter egger of some kind :).

The mother is white, with a beard and gray legs. She does have a tail. She lays seafoam to light teal eggs, was surrendered as an Auracana to me, but I figured she was Ameracauna at best. Again, my yard has rescue chickens, some of which are unmistakable (like my bantam blue frizzle) and others not so much. This cute little chick popped out of a green egg, though, and I'm pretty proud as a first time incubation mommy!

Well as a fellow breeder of BBR wheaten color araucana, I must say, yours have the nicest color of any I have seen in a long time. My only advice is to breed for the willow leg color like the hen on the left. But other than that you are doing great.

Hi, folks. This is my first post on BYC. My wife and kids set their hearts on raising wheaten BBR araucanas over a year ago, and we've had no luck getting started. Can any of you help me find BBR wheaten eggs or chicks to buy? A very well-reputed breeder sold me two sets of eggs last year that were likely mishandled in the mail -- one got lost for more than a week during a heat wave -- and neither set developed a single embryo. We support that breeder completely, but that source no longer sells eggs (or chicks). We're kind of at a loss as to what to do, because we live out of the mainstream of the show-circuit states here in rural southeast New Mexico, so we're not likely to be rubbing elbows with any of you. Our goal is to develop mostly a breeding flock. Our kids would like to join 4-H and show birds that way, but that's about it for showing. I personally look forward to the challenge of the genetics side of it. I'm also a high school genetics teacher and would love to incorporate the lethal gene hatching saga into an incubation activity for my students. Alas, wheaten BBR hatching eggs (the wheaten BBR variety was the heartfelt selection of my wife and kids) and chicks just aren't offered anywhere we can find. So we can't even get started. Does anyone have any suggestions about where to look, or from whom we might buy eggs or chicks? -- Kris J.

Hi Kris,

If you are on facebook, look for the araucana page. There are many of us breeders there. There are not very many working on the BBR Wheatens. I think myself and Ann Charles are the only two. Ann has sold a few hens and pullets to people who are hoping to start breeding wheatens also.

I will most likely not be selling any wheatens this year except maybe the fall when it comes time to pare things down for the winter breeding pens.

Hi there! I was wondering if any of you sell, or can point me in the right direction, bantam rumpless araucana chicks or hatching eggs. Chicks would be preferred but hatching eggs are OK too if chicks are impossible. My post office pretty well destroys shipped eggs (I know it's on my end because neighbors and friends in my area have all had problems with our particular office), but it's been a couple months since I ordered anything so ready to try again haha.
