Araucana thread anyone?

Anyone interested in talking Araucana? I've just, quite unexpectedly, obtained five bantam Araucana chickens..... two blue hens, two black hens and a rooster who I'm uncertain the color of (I'll post pictures as soon as I can figure out how).  I'm full of questions about this breed.  I know the basics, like they should be rumpless and tuffted and lay a blue to green egg. What I don't know are the details like, eye color, leg color, etc....  I would love to see photos and talk about this marvelous bird!

Awesome. I'm probably going to get my first negative feedback from selling Araucana eggs on eBay. I only offered them for sale when I was certain my eggs had excellent fertility. In fact, today I just hatched a batch of my Araucana's eggs. I had a 90% hatch, with zero that didn't develop. The 10% that didn't hatch were dead in shell, tufted chicks that I assume suffered from the lethal gene.

The person has four eggs developing. I'm not going to lie, when I first started with Araucanas and shipped eggs, I thought it was GREAT to have four developing! I am guessing they don't feel the same way, or know how delicate/difficult it is to hatch shipped Araucana eggs.

Don't worry, I understand. My first batch of shipped araucana eggs, I had 10 out of 20 hatch and 4 died shortly after. With the eggs I got from you it looks like I have 8 developing so far. Yours were packaged just like my first batch. It's a gamble.

Here are a few of my birds that are heading to the first APA show of the season next month.

Dark Red Wheaten BBR pullet APA correct color
Dark Red Wheaten BBR Cock APA correct color
Golden Duckwing Cock APA correct color
Golden duckwing pullet - She will feather in closer to the correct color as she matures.
Wild type BBR pullet - non APA correct color for large fowl Araucana.
She will be shown in the AOV or All Other Varieties Category.
Wild Type BBR pullet - She will also be shown in the AOV category.

I have a few other birds headed to the show but they are dodging the camera at the moment.

Hi Angelchins ... before I even looked at your location, I knew it would most likely be Australian, from the look of your Millie. Your Araucana ( like my Mindy ) ... has an upright tail and probably only tiny tufts and a very small beard. Your Millie does seem to have a crown of feathers on her head ... she is quite lovely and a beautiful colour. This particular thread is mainly about American Araucana's which are very very different to ours. There are so many 'looks' to the Araucana, and then there's the Ameraucana breed of chicken. I am not sure if any of them are the same over in the U.S. but our birds (there) do not rate as Araucana's. By the same token, most likely their rumpless etc. Araucana's wouldn't rate here. Some of the American bred Araucana's have spectacular colours, and beautiful big tufts on either sides of their faces. They are beautiful birds, but nothing like ours - except that they also lay blue / green eggs. It's a strange world - the chicken world.

There is a thread that was started, the pages are all Australian bred chooks etc. and it is called "Australians - Where are You All". I think this link should get you to it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/186559/australians-where-are-you-all/ Otherwise you can click on my name above my avatar and have a look at posts I have put on that thread and go from there. Your Millie is really beautiful. Good to hear that your black girl has begun laying. My Mindy is what I would call a 'text book' chicken - she stopped laying in May, went into a moult, then into a heavier moult - grew her new feathers, and has now begun to lay again. Just as she should. Being that was her first true moult, she is now officially a 'hen' no longer a pullet.

Whatever you do - have fun ........

Cheers ..... AB

Thank you Vickie,

I have your hen that I will be sending to you at the end of September when the weather cools down, in a breeding pen with the BBR boy pictured, so you if you have an incubator, be prepared to hatch some of her eggs once you get her.
