Araucana thread anyone?

It will be nice to have more people on the araucana forum also to keep it going. I was so excited when I saw you joined Cathy. So get with it Megan. LOL!

There are pages and pages of info and lots of posts with pics which I am constantly looking and comparing mine to theirs. They are going to be moving the forum to google soon so watch for it.

Personally I love this forum cause there are so many more people that post here.

Just to maybe increase my knowlege a little, what is meant by the "eyestripe" of a day-old chick? On the topic of the Araucana club, I also plan on joining(sp?) at the beginning of the new year. Somewhere in this house I believe I still have an info packet from the club from back in the "70's. If I can find it will post some pics of it on this thread.

Are they just TRYING to give me gray hairs? There is no reason for the chickens to be out in the snow! They have coops, covered outdoor areas and thick trees to huddle inside of, yet every time I go out there, there are 3 or 4 of them wading boldly through the deep snow towards....... what? ????? Where do they think they are going? Every year they do this, every year I make the coops and runs more inviting than they were the year before in hopes of keeping them in, but no.......
It's been clinging to zero degrees for days, with wind chills below zero, and I'm still getting around a dozen eggs a day with no supplemental heat (save the hot tea buckets and numerous hot mashes a day) and no lights. I am so ridiculously proud of my hens right now.
On another note, now that my white Araucanas are contrasted against the white snow, I'm seeing yellow highlights. Is this due to the sun, is this color leakage? Does this tell me anything about the genetic make up of these guys?

Haha Cute pic! My araucana are not phased by snow either. No matter how deep, they'll make their way through it, over it, around it. Crazy birds!

Are they breeding true? If so, I think it's just the photo, or the snow's contrast, or dirtiness. If otherwise, what you're seeing is something else, such as duckwing, behind hidden by white. I've got an EE and an Ameraucana, one dominant and one recessive, who are hiding duckwing or wheaten, and it's quite a yellow cast they show in their hackle and saddle.

Anyway, hope all other snowy winter folks here are doing well. . . I just lost some chicks and a whole incubator due to the snow/wind/cold lately. The power went out overnight for 10 hours, and the next morning. . . Horrible. Luckily I haven't lost any Araucanas.

Illia, sorry to hear about your losses with that weather. Winter sure can be challenging sometimes.

You made a good point about the coloring on the white. Could be genetics or if they get a lot of corn in their diet, you can see this yellowing effect as well.

I haven't had a chance to breed with them yet; Bionca there is not laying yet. I asked because I can't wait to get started breeding next spring and find out what they're made of so I was fishing for a little early info. I've never heard of corn in the diet affecting the white; interesting......

Oh Illia, that's horrible. I'm sorry you're having a rough go of it right now. I think we're sharing the same nasty storm system at the moment. This will not last forever, but it sure does feel like it will never end sometimes.

Well there's a few, what do you think? good so far? I only have 3 tailed out of the 12 Araucanas I have, I'm pretty excited to find out what I'll get. One of the 7 in the older bunch is already crowing at about 13 weeks old!

Well you're the first to say around this forum that they're hoping for a cockerel. Congrats!

Anyway. . . I see a cockerel so far on the first one, but it's hard to say from the photo, honestly.

Second is a definite cockerel

Third is a definite cockerel

Fourth is. . . . cute.
