Araucana thread anyone?

Well you're the first to say around this forum that they're hoping for a cockerel. Congrats!

Anyway. . . I see a cockerel so far on the first one, but it's hard to say from the photo, honestly.

Second is a definite cockerel

Third is a definite cockerel

Fourth is. . . . cute.

What about in the third pic behind the cockeral? hen, right?

Yep. Gold duckwing, too. Or BBR. Honestly I'm not sure anymore because the definition for BBR these days is really tossing me around into a whirlwind of confusion. I used to think it was a lot like gold duckwing, then people constantly showed Wheaten birds (including wheaten Araucanas), so now I'm just sort of lost. . .

Illia,
I'm so sorry about your losses. Have you considered getting a battery back up? I have one that I got for my computer. It sets plugged in all the time and it continually charges. It's intent is to avoid those nasty power surges and outages that can ruin a computer. It will run my computer for 8 hours if the power goes off. I have my incubator and turner plugged into it. I can always turn off my computer in a pinch and if we go more than 8 hours here without power, then it's usually something "big" here. Mines in the house so it's a less of a temp difference than if I had it in the barn but I still want a power back up. Do you have any more eggs to set? If you have some and don't plan to set them now, I have a Maran hen that went broody today. I stuck some Serama eggs under her but they can be taken out and put in the incubator in a few days and they'll still have a better start than in the incubator from the start.

I have 2 chicks from eggs hatched from Lanae's eggs and they are looking like a pullet and a cockerel. I've learned a lot from you and your observations and appreciate them. I also hatched a couple of chicks that are chipmunk striped that I'm told are a cockerel and a pullet. I can't wait to see what color they are, most likely silver duckwing but there is a possible columbian restrictor according to one breeder. Is that common in Araucana's?

Hang in there, I hope for us all that this winter will prove to be less difficult than the past 2 winters!
and seriously, if you will have extra eggs that you won't be hatching, please PM me if you would sell some.
Cathy

This boy here is a blue-gold duckwing with Columbian in him. Not only is it proven by the fact that his blue and gold is reversed, but even his offspring proved it to me by giving me silver "quail" type colored Easter Eggers.

I have extra eggs, but none are Araucana. Haven't had an Araucana egg since my second last hatch, which of course also failed because it was more than halfway through when I lost power.

I've thought of a generator, but am not sure where to put it, honestly. . .

Do you want only tufted roos? I'm in Bartow, FL, and I need to find homes for 1 bantam cockerel & 1 standard cockerel that I hatched out of shipped eggs from Ann Charles (SkyBlueEgg). I'd be happy to bring them to you.

I have a 9 month old (DOH 2/22/10) clean-faced, partially tailed bantam Araucana cockerel; this pic was taken at 7 months:

Also, a 9 month old (DOH 2/22/10) clean-faced, partially tailed standard Araucana cockerel, pic also taken when he was 7 months old:

Illia,
I was told one of the chicks might have the columbian gene so I'll have to wait. I don't know much about how the columbian gene looks or works but I "like" that rooster you have

What do you think here???

The rooster these chicks are from

The hen they're out of

The chicks when they were a day or so old

Chick 1, I was told is a cockerel. He's got some nice tufts coming in.

Here is chick 2, I was told is a pullet

They are getting some wing feathers but then they are the first feathers so they aren't the color they will be when they're mature. I haven't gotten any good pics lately since it's been so cloudy and dark and I get better pics when there is sun coming through the window.

You sure that hen is a pure Araucana? Putting her tail aside, she's got a very level body and rather large head with smaller eyes. . . Almost like a Brahma or something.

I can't tell much from the hen's photo though. It looks she may have a Columbian allele though. That, or she's just a silver duckwing x wheaten.

Yes, she should be purebred. She's from a well known breeder. I caught her ducking through some weeds. She's the hardest one to take pics of and won't stand for me and pose like some of the others. She's always been a little more evasive and that's how I came up with her name, Slinky. She slinks away quietly through the others when she sees me coming.
Seems every time I get the camera out she starts looking for a way to hide and has her head and body down in that position. She isn't normally like that.

Here's another one like that

Here she is as a chick, she never was easy to photograph

Here are a couple taken in Feb. as she was trying to get away from the camera.......or me bugging her.

Ah, see, I knew it was just the photo. . .

She doesn't have Columbian in her, but instead I think she carries either some ginger or mahogany or dun or something. The breeder does carry birds with all three of those genes. (not all as in "all in one bird," but, you know

)

She's very pretty though! I'd love to see what passes on. The male looks to be a very leaky black, which should give us some clues in the offspring as to what the female is carrying.
