Araucana thread anyone?

Oh yeah, splash too.

So he's either a white x gold duckwing, a gold duckwing with columbian, or a splash-gold duckwing with columbian (like cashdl's)

Now you guys do remember who his parents are?? Slinky and Degas. No other possibilities since Slinky was the only one in the pen that could have laid the blue egg and the only Roosters she was exposed to, the only ones I had at that time, were Rudy and Degas. Color aside, Degas won out cause he was the only one of this trio of Araucana's that has tufts so that cut Rudy out of the running with Slinky also being smooth faced.

Can you even "get" splash with no blue or splash birds? Since I also raise Serama's, I am familiar with FW colors (freakin weird)

but I didn't think there would be such issues with the Araucana's. It was mentioned he might even have a columbian restrictor. So, could he be a silver duckwing with a columbian restrictor? and what would that look like in mature feathering? I think Slinky has the answers to part of it but I can't seem to put it together.

So, here is this little guys parents....whom I need to name and quit referring to him as the little guy.

Degas - I don't think we can blame this color on him, besides I think the cocks take more from the hen, right?

Slinky - I didn't name her Slinky for nothing, she was always up to something and I think she's hiding a gene.......

Ok I'm disapointed help me out
We have got eggs from
skyblue
birch run farm
upintheholler
shaffer
thom on ebay
and a few others

Most of the eggs that did hatched, the bilaterally tufted chicks died at 2-3 days old
The other thing is now that we are breeding our own, again the bilaterally tufted that hatch are dying at 2-3 day old
We have 3 seperate pens (3 roosters)
#1 is bilaterally tufted with 3 hens with no tufts
#2 is no tuftes with 2 hens that are single tufted
#3 is single tufted with 3 hens with no tuftes

Is this our problem or is this what we should expect?
We have only hatched out 25-30 chicks from young hens, so will this improve as the hens mature?

Ok so here are the 3 roos I kept. I am for sure no expert but I think they all have and need qualities pieces to the puzzle. Please jump in and enlighten me or let me know if I am on the right path?

1) This is the only tuffed roo I kept (parted ways with another), hes is what looks like solid blk to me? leg color definitely has comb issues and has the stray tail feather?

2) not tuffed but completely rumpless at least as best I can tell? leg color ? comb is better than #1. not sure about color I was thinking I would work with BBS ?

3)This one is clean face, rumples, and smaller comb but leg color? And his color although I like it not sure if it works with my hens?

I have 9 blk hens 1 blue or splash not sure (included pick) and two of these brown colored ones one tuffed one clean faced. I was thinking I would use one roo or two of the roos with all the girls for now as I still have pen building to do and would like to segregate my Amearaucas next LOL that is no taking into account the pens for my ever expanding collection of games oh to be chicken addicted with no remorse ah ha

Yes, I always lose my bilaterally tufted chicks first. This is a breed only a masochist can love. The good araucanas are also very susceptible to Marek's disease and you are likely to lose chicks to that too if you don't vaccinate. As soon as you point to a chick in the brooder and say, "Ooooh, look at THAT one!" It'll be dead tomorrow.

Well, just look at your flock, pride&joy! You've really made some headway there!! Congratulations. That last girl is a beautiful BBR pullet and her tuft looks really nice to me; does she have a second one on the other side?

I am speechless! This guy is gorgeous! I wish I knew enough to tell you what he is made of, and I really wish I knew enough to make a version of him for my own yard. I could have a field full of chickens like him and be a very, very happy poultry owner. It would be very interesting to me to see what he produces with your blue and black hens.​

Tufted always die first, bottom line. They are definately more delicate, and if you look at them like they might be a keeper, they will die. My last batch that was hatched by a broody I had two double tufted blues and they both died by day two. The chicks are 3 weeks old now and I have 1 georgous double tufted splash left. I swear I throw food and water at them without even looking at them. I am sure it will die if I give them a second thought. I do have a double tufted blue roo that I helped hatch ( he would have never made it by himself) he was sickly with poopy butt for 3 weeks, and I gave him baths and played with him. I babied him even though I was sure the whole time he was a goner. He is 5 months old now and doing great. I still give him a spa day everyonce in a while cause he loves it.

I love the shape and color of the 3rd roo. He is my favorite. He is not an accepted color so don't worry about leg color. If he were mine I would put him with the two hens and see what I got. Or put him with all your hens. But he would be my choice. He has a better body shape than the tufted black one and better legs. The tufted blacks legs are two long for his body, it makes him look a little gawky, his neck is also two long and thin. The best comb is on the splash one also. I would call his color a butchers apron splash.

I guess I am having great luck then. I have not lost any of the babies that have hatched tufted or clean faced. As far as I can see in them the tufted ones all have double tufts and only 1 with single tuft. The ones that die in the shell only a couple have been early death. Most of them look fully formed or very close to it
