Araucana thread anyone?

This property is my husband and I's dream property. It took us buying fixing up several properties and selling them before we were able to get this. It is 10 flat acres on two levels. One level of 6 acres has the house, shop, garden, chickens and coops, several smaller shops, drive and 3 acres of lawn. The other level is a gentle slope down and sits on a creek. Thats where I keep my horses and horse stalls. Our property is surrounded by creek on 3 sides which makes it very private. Even in a flood year the creek doesn't even come close to the animals. I spend every moment I can outside. Even when the rain is pouring down, you can usually find me either making a new flower bed or playing with the animals.

Because we have so much usable space my husband doesn't complain as much about the chickens doing the "texas land grab" as they spill over to other areas. He does wrinkle his nose and brow every now and then, like today when he hopefully asked me if I was only going to build 3 chicken tractors. I said yes, today. Poor man.

I wanted to mention to anyone that is interested and a coffee or tea drinker. The araucana club has araucana club mugs for sale they are $ 7.00 ea plus shipping. They are on their website under the store tab. Take a look at them. They are nice looking and their sale helps support the araucana club.

Lanae,
Those are so cool and you can paint them to match or make each one unique, love it!
There are sooo many people making coops to sell right now, I've been tempted but they're a bit pricey and my husband could make them so much cheaper.....if he had the time. We have a neighbor going through a divorce (and there's a lot of money and property involved so it may take a while) and she has 2 nice coops with good buildings and she said she would sell them to me but she has to wait till after the divorce is final. Soo, I am thinking I'll go ahead and make plans not to get those and if I get them "too" then I'll just have to make more chicks

I really love using a raised bed for the coop and pen when it's a permanent set up. It has better drainage that way so it's not going to get muddy so they stay clean if I add some gravel and sand (great for them anyway).

On the north side of our house, we made a raised garden spot that was used a lot till the last 3-4 yrs and then we just mowed it and left it empty. It's about 20 by 20 then there is the rest of that side of the yard, one side with privacy fence. I'd like to make that whole side a chicken yard with a couple more coops and fence that side in where I can turn them out on nice days after I get home from work. I don't want to leave them out there all the time or eventually, there wouldn't be a speck of grass. My husbands parents fenced a large back yard and just let their RIR's have the run of the yard 24/7 and by the end of summer, there was nothing left. They fed them good, "very" good but they really love greens

I prefer mine be penned and allowed out when I'm home in the evenings or a day when I'm off work.

We aren't really using that side of the yard anyway and unlike a lot of people, we love to wake up to a rooster crowing. We're up early anyway. (that's the side of the house where our bedroom is).

Finally after 2 yrs, I *think* I have an Araucana!!!!! Yay me! The pullet is rumpless; does not have a beard nor muffs/tuffs (sorry not sure which is correct). She is young..about 3 mths - she might get tuffs later?? Her color is unusual....I'm thinking partridge or duckwing? I'm only sure she has blue color in her genes. She is beautiful! I'll try to get a pic soon!!!

Ha, Ha, yes, it is such a thrill to bring home Araucanas! Congratulations. The only way that she might grow tufts later is if she has had them plucked out up to this point by pesky flock members. Looking forward to photos.

Radiodog, COngrats! Need photo's please

Also, I have a couple of 5 month old Araucana cockerels for sale. I'll take some photo's tomorrow. They're out of Lanae's hatching eggs and I was sssoooo sure one of them was a pullet but, not. Definitely.

One is blue with some red on the shoulders and chest, partially tailed, tufted. The other is black/red (gold hackles/mahogay and black body) tufts and rumpless. I put them on my webpage on my sales page and set paypal up there. I'm taking photo's of them tomorrow in daylight and will put them on the webpage but email me and I'll have more photo's with some closeups.

Hi Cathy,

I would love to see photos of the brown red roo. I may be interrested since I no longer have the roo he is out of. I had hoped to keep at least one roo out of him but was a ding dong and sold them all.
