I think the cuckoo araucana is georgous and alot of others do also. The problem is in the amount of people that have araucana is so few. Those that show are fewer. It would be years before they would be recognized as a color. Look at the blues. They are accepted in Bantam but not large fowl, and they are super popular. Doesn't make sense. I know a couple of people are working on getting the blues recognized, but my understanding is they have a ways to go.

Having said that, I think every color is worthy of propagating and continuing. Someone somewhere likes them. I have a trio that throws cuckoo. I am waiting for that perfect double tufted bird.

The big reason blues aren't in the APA is because there actually are so FEW people breeding them.

There are a LOT of blues out there with gold leakage, duckwing leaking in, etc. But I've yet to see a good flock of LF blues that have been bred for more than a year.

Cuckoos, I'd love to see more people work on. I myself am working on LF cuckoos, but honestly, I think most people gave up. I don't know what happened to Ann Charles' and Gary Ramey's are less barred now than they were before, plus they have gold leakage. I occasionally see a really nice barred bantam, but LF? Not really. Every one I've seen has its flaws. Although from years ago, I saw some very nice ones.

I ran into a woman last fall at a show; she had a whole bunch of Araucana roosters and was wanting to give them away. We made tentative plans for me to take them from her some day in the future (we live four hours away from one another). I got the phone call last Sunday that they were coming my way if I was still interested, so I loaded up and headed out into the freezing rain/snow whipping wind storm. It took an hour and a half to make the normally 40 minute drive to the meeting point and later I heard that there had been a record breaking number of car accidents along that rout in exactly the time frame that I was driving it; NASTY WEATHER but what'cha gonna do, we're talking Araucanas here.....
When I got home, I covered their carriers with blankets to protect them from the horrific wind and nearly crawled my way to their make shift coop, shoved them in, and have spent the days from then to now trying to keep the flock alive and my children well and warm - no chance to look over my newest bounty of boys.... This morning, when I woke up to blessedly warm weather, I was so excited to at last be able to look them over and see what I have.
I pulled the first guy out and was horrified to find a single comb and plentiful tail feathers. OK, so that's one down.... Second boy out..... tail feathers and, uhm, something in the spot that most birds have combs, but this was more like a gigantic slice of pizza stuck to his head - he seriously cannot see out of one eye because the comb flops out and over his eye - and of course more tail feathers.... sigh..... Boy number three out - Tufts - good- legs that look like they belong on a flamingo, bad, tail feathers... bad... Boy number four out, and of course he looks great because he is WHITE! I do not want to breed white Araucanas, they're fine they are just not my thing but I keep getting white Araucanas. Seriously, I am hounded by white Araucanas, I keep giving them away and they keep finding their way back to my place...... Why can't I be hounded by blue Araucanas.... Anyway, O.K. so, one rooster left and just as I was reaching in to try and pull him out, he flaps up and over my head, runs to the top of the little hill in my yard, plants his legs in a stance of defiance and crows his magnificent little Araucana call and there he is, the double tufted, rumples, handsome rooster I had braved the foul weather in hopes of finding!

Wish I could ship. I've got these two for sale. . .

Splash Cuckoo, would love to keep him but I need to cut down to just the boys I'm using, and I'm not working on splash or blue cuckoos. . .

Splash cockerel, perfectly balanced tufts. Photo from a while ago, but he still looks the same except a little more mature and bigger spurs
