Araucana thread anyone?

grumpty grumblings are squawking grumbles? i cant quite explain it, it reminds me of the noises that a setting hen makes when you pick her up... Here are some updated photos of my 3 and the little one thats just getting started:

sorry for the dark photo, it was the only place i could attempt to corner the 3 for size comparison:

blue hen? i think its a hen, makes the same squawking noises that the other hen does, and has an almost non existent comb, only color is the bit around her nose.

the last hatch, a black with 2 white wing feathers that i'm hoping will go away. I think its a roo, he gives me the same attitude the red one did before i knew it was a roo.

Although i have no tufted, i think i'll pair the 2 patterned ones together and the blue and black together and hatch and see what i can get next year. mostly i like the rumplesness anyways lol.
Thanks

also, i think that they are both blue based, could be wrong but i think they are. the roo for sure, you can see it on his chest pattern, the hen you can see the same kinda blue in he wings when they are open and it peaks out other small spots too... what do you guys think?

Hi Syble,

The black one looks like my black pullet that came out of my birchen pen. She is very dark in the face also. I am getting quite a few from the birchen pen that have the white feathers also. I love love love the color on the patchwork hen. I have one of those also and I can't wait to see how she looks all grown up.

I think your roo is going to be stunning once his saddle feathers come in.

I've got about 2 dozen of my eggs ready to hatch this week. They are the first hatch with the double tufted splash roo that I got from Smoothmule. Here's hoping I get more tufts.

I hatched some of my own eggs from one of my clean faced rumpless roo and got a huge amount of pullets that hatched. All clean faced and rumpless.

I've put some of this years pullets in with the roo from Smoothmule. They are almost ready to start laying. He hasn't shown much interest in them yet except for his occasional dance around them.

I have a neat colored pullet, I will try to describe because my camera is giving me fits. Her base color is dark chocolate almost black but definately chocolate. Does anyone remember Illia's neat colored tufted hen that looked gold and chocolate? That is what my chick is feathering out as. Her legs are coffee colored, her head is brown, the feathers are gold penciled. She came out of my birchen roo and my silver duckwing hen. I am wondering if there is a color name.

So I have looked around and she looks like a partridge rock hen in pattern except the colors are chocolate and gold with chocolate legs. She is tufted but they are in the quill stage so I can't wait to see how they will turn out.

I will try to get a pic.

thanks guys. She sounds maybe some form of dun? chocolate is sexlinked if i remember right so her mom would have to have been chocolate too for that to work... look forward to some photos!

Here's to hopeing all of you have a great hatch, it can be so frustrating hatching shipped eggs. Sometimes even home produced eggs don't give such a good percentage of chicks. I have discovered that using the "dry-hatch" method in my LG's has significantly improved my hatch rate. My 'bator's are set up in the basement where the temps are most stable but guess there is a naturally high humidity level. Have chicks hatching right now, haven't seen any tufts yet but chicks aren't dry and fluffy yet. Nice assortment of colors- blacks, dark reds and one pale blue. Charlie
