Araucana vs Ameraucana

The quickest way is that Auracaunas don't have a "rump" Americaunas have one. There are alot of mutts out there too. Lots of folks are going to chime in on this one, lol.

Where did you get them from? If you bought both from a breeder, the easiest way to tell is that ameraucanas have puffy cheeks and araucanas don't. In some cases both have tails so don't let that be a determining factor. Pics would help or more information.

If you got them from a hatchery or feed store they are neither araucana nor ameraucana.

If you bought hatching eggs the puffy cheeks are the best way to tell.

Yes, you will probably get plenty of response on this question! There is much erroneous info out there and a lot of it is from the commercial hatcheries. Some of them label the blue/green egg layer chicks Araucana's, when actually they are EE's( Easter Egger's) The EE's were used to develop the Ameraucana breed thru selective breeding for color and type. Araucana's are a whole different breed from both EE's and Ameraucana's. They are a rumpless chicken and do not have a beard or the muffs of the other two breeds but ideally have tufts which are feathers that protrude from the side of their face. There is on other threads on BYC an almost endless debate on this subject. Again, most of the confusion comes from the hatcheries. To my knowledge there are no commercial hatcheries that sell true Araucana's. Hope this helps and hope that you weren't "scammed" by ordering Araucana chicks...

I bought 3 chicks last year at a feed store and I can't remember what they were advertising them as. They have the greatest temperment.

. I bought three more this year and again..can't remember what it said at the store. I don't think they said EE; possibly Ameraucana? Thanks all for the info! I love this site.

Thanks. I have three chicks that look just like Wendy Wyleen did when she was just a chick; so I'm thinking they probably are too! Great to know. I just got my first three Barred Plymouth Rocks too.

I raise breed and ,hopefully this year will have something to show, Araucanas. I however could not pass up the adorable little fuzzy faced EE's at the Tractor Supply. They are sweet and quiet birds that reliably lay throughout the year. Gotta Love them.
