I have sereval Araucanas, and I know they lay colorful eggs. My question is: I heard that there might be a supplement or special food you can feed them to make their eggs more vibrant? Is this ture and if so what is it? And where can I get it?

never heard of that one...mine just start laying...I always get a greenish blue egg, the other day I got one that looked dark like a marans eggs, but had a bluish tint...almost towards a purple...I wish it would come out good on pictures I posted it but hard to tell...

still wondering about that egg.

True Araucanas and true Ameraucanas lay only blue eggs---See the Araucana Club of America... and the Ameraucana Breeders Club

I have never heard of anything that you could add to their diet that would change the egg color or the hue of the egg.

I would love to see the 'purple' egg..

Dixie...I did post the picture in another thread, its real hard to see it in the picture...but when I got it...Im telling you its like a maran egg color but like someone decided to play games and has a hue blue in it...and then I looked at it more and it has a purple hue!!! Im like wow...how do I explain this one to me...hard to tell in pictures though...i tried and tried to get a good picture.

I looked at it with a magnifying glass...in the sun, under good light...it has a different color a purplish one...not brown and not quite blue...hard to explain...trying to get more pictures of it to post...Im gonna hatch that one!...see what I get.

Thanks for posting it. It does have a purple tint to it.. I hope you keep great records on this egg and take lots of pictures of your hatch...Dixie

The only thing that I can think of is Layena and that makes their eggs have a harder shell and stuff like that.

so Im not NUTS!!!! you see the purplish color also...what happened and there is yet another post...my EE...was sitting in the nest...she had her feathers fluffed like I had never seen before...she is 28wks old....I thought oh she is going to lay, ...then I noticed she kept pushing something under her...

she had an egg, I thought ...its not hers its dark...more on the color of a maran...she kept brooding on it...so I was thinking ok, honey...its not your baby ...so when she moved, I reached in and took it...she stayed in the nest for alittle bit and then got out I looked and looked and LOOKED at the egg, and I noticed the odd color....later about 1hr I came back, and there was a blue egg in that nest...hmmm so she did lay an egg...

I dont know who layed this egg but the color is odd...more on the purplish/bluish with alittle hue of brown in it...the speckles are dark purple, not the big ones on the egg, but the smaller ones!...so I want to hatch it...but still who laid it??? So how would LAYENA affect the egg color, it only effects the yolk color and the thickness of the shell.

this is the egg before I took it from her

I was having a difficult time getting the color balance right when I was taking this picture until I did a couple of things: I put the eggs in a neutral colored brown basket on a wooden table top next to a large window with indirect sunlight. To highlight the shadows of the picture I took one of my kids white chairs and laid it on it's side opposite of the light source to reflect soft lighting into the shadows. I can't get accurate colors using indoor lighting. The light meter in your camera will get thrown off if you have a background that is not neutral in tone. Straw or wood type materials for your background might give you a more accurate color reading. I hope this helps.
