Araucanas!

Hey All

Will definitely share pics and lots!!
They are large fowl - although he does have some bantams too but I am just going to get the big ones (that's the plan anyways

I hope I don't come home with more than the 6- he also has 4 geriatric Araucana hens and some silkies....)

Not sure how blue the eggs are, but it's a start

24 hours from noe I will have them in my car

It depends on what big breeds you've got. Bantam araucanas are relatively big sturdy guys. Mine easily take care of themselves around Welsummers, Speckled Sussex, and Marans. I'd be more cautious around large fowl of more aggressive breeds.

Well, I'll agree with sturdy, but certainly not BIG. Mine have all been my smallest bantams, excluding chicks

Much smaller than silkies or bantam brahmas--similar in size, but not type to d'uccles.

Well, bantam brahmas are HUGE -- remember, they are "small" versions of REALLY large birds! And who can really tell how large silkies are, under all that fluff?

My bantam araucanas, all except for one really tiny one, are bigger -- or at least appear to have more mass -- than my bantam leghorns or bantam rocks. NOT bigger than my bantam cochins, though -- which, again, are REALLY LARGE birds in the standard fowl.

But okay, I'll amend to just say "sturdy".

FWIW, standard araucanas are not very large. Could your be standards?

Since one of my roos is reputed to have done a lot of winning in the AOV variety before I bought it from a well established show breeder, I seriously doubt it.

As your chart shows, they're larger than both the bantam d'Uccles and leghorns I've got. And as your chart also shows and as I've already said, it's natural that they wouldn't be as large as the brahmas. I'm surprised they weigh as much as the cochins, but I guess those cochins have a lot of feathers to hide their weight. I guess in that sense the bantam araucana breed is even bigger than I thought! And as for the rocks, I'm perfectly happy to conclude that my bantam rocks are small for their breed.

If it makes you feel any better, he didn't have a bantam rooster.

Have you tried the Araucana Club of America? I beleive there is a breeder in California that will have bantam eggs this spring.

Here is a picture of my new rooster- Mr Burns (short for side burns)

I didn't take any more pictures because I didn't want to stress them out anymore (4.5 hour drive)
