Hey everyone! We are gonna have a very cold cold snap soon. Actual temp with be -19 with -50 windchill.

What should I do to
Prepare my flock? How should I treat frostbite? Thanks!

Wind chill is not a factor inside the coop on draft protected birds.
If you haven't already done so, make sure there is copious ventilation in the coop with no open water sources inside the coop and put up wind blocks with openings at the top on the run.
Make sure that the birds go to roost with full crops.
Add some dry fluffy bedding to the coop floor.
Offer the flock a warm electrolyte mash in the morning after the big chill to help them cope with the temperature stress.

My flock went through -23F temps in their first year with only minor frostbite damage to the tips of the rooster's comb. When it gets that cold, there isn't much you can do about it. Don't touch frostbitten tissue. Just monitor the healing process and intervene if it looks like it's infected.
