I have six little pullets (or so I thought), but a friend who is familiar with birds said he thought three of my six are actually cockrels. What do you guys think? They are all about 9 weeks old. These are the ones he thought were males:
Oh, no! What are the odds that I pick the one chicken out of 100 in the pullet box that happens to be a male - and two times over at that. Both the RIR and BR were bought as pullets. The BLR Wyandotte was straight run from a breeder. What is it about the Barred Rock that makes it looks like a male?
That much color on the comb at that age is a dead giveaway for male. Females don't get that much color until they're close to laying, more like 5 months. On the barred rock the color is male, they're lighter than pullets. The red looks to be getting darker shading on the wings, also male traits.
Oh, gosh. I am just sick over this. I've been worried about the four chickens I bought straight run, but I never thought the two pullets I bought would be males. I guess there is no way to keep them all three, right?
Not nearly enough. If these three are cockerels, I have three males and three females. I think there must have been a new employee at the chicken sexing station of the hatchery - either that, or I just have terrible luck!
