My geese live with the chickens, but they free-range all day so the only time they really spend around the chickens is during the night. I have one kiddy pool that all the birds drink out of and the geese hog it for awhile, then they get bored and let the ducks and chickens drink too. I would get at least a pair of geese, they are very social birds and one would get very lonely very quickly by itself.
You don't have to get your geese from a breeder. If you want high quality, expensive birds then yes, they would be the right place to go. But if your just looking for some backyard birds to have fun with then hatchery quality birds would work fine. My Pilgrims came from two sources, Ideal Hatchery and a breeder. The birds from Ideal were much more friendly then the birds from the breeder.
