are Buff Orpingtons Considered " Hardy " ?

I Just wanted to Know, Considering The Temp. Here ( North Carolina ) Ranges From 105 ( Summer ) To 0 ( Winter )

Just wandering, And if you see my Other Threads, I Am sort of worried About the Temp for my Girls... I Am New to chickens, and i need Advice. But really, are Buff Orpingtons Considered A " Hardy " Breed ?

I know Buff Orpingtons are considered cold hardy because of their tremendous pantaloons.

I don't know the stats on the heat tolerance, but my BOs have survived 100+ temps. I provide them with misters and shade, and places to dirt bathe in the shade. I think most straight-comb breeds are more suited to high temps.

But what About the Cold? ( I know i Can overreact, But This IS my first Chicken Winter. )

Mine are doing fine here in kentucky ,had zero temps last winter and 100's this summer. I agree with orpingtonmanor they have more trouble with heat than cold. The girls seemed to do fine in the cold as long as they have water thats not frozen. they slowed down on the laying a little but still were out free ranging everyday. some don't like the snow some don't mind but either way they'll do just fine without heat.

Orpingtons are known to do quite well in the cold. It's only the heat that gives them a problem. Though I had no losses this summer during the 107 - 109 degree days with lots of shade, water, and air circulation. Plus a tray with shallow water for them to wade in. They didn't seem to suffer any more than my tight feathered dark cornish or the polish.

Im in NC. & my English Orps. fair well in the summer & love the cold weather, they were loveing it this morning !

Nah, I would not consider Orpingtons as cold-hardy, but then I would not consider 0 F as cold

In general the smaller and meatier the comb/wattles the better in cold climate.

We had adopted an older Buff Orpington from on Orchard and we had her for four years until she finally died of old age this spring. I would say that they are cold hardy without a doubt since we had no troubles with her in any way in our Minnesota Winters. I plan on ordering more next year she was one of our favorite.
