Are building permits needed to construct a run? Please let me know

I've done a 180 and decided to just get three more chickens WITHOUT asking permission. If I get caught by the Village authorities, I'll deal with it somehow.
-Carolyn By the way, to keep out cold winter winds, I've installed clear plastic heavyweight showercurtains on the inside of all four walls of the run. Needed about ten of them. Got them for about 8 dollars each at Bed Bath and Beyond. I'll remove them in the Spring, and will reinstall them next winter. I attached them using washers and screws. Works great. Let's in all the light, complete transparency so I can see in and the hens can see out.

I had been thinking about using cup hooks at the top and screwing a small piece of metal at the bottom for the magnets to attach to.We don't have the really bad weather like u do.

Your cup hooks and magnets should work fine if the winds aren't strong enough to blow the curtains' magnets off the metal. About using magnets near chickens, I seem to remember an article from decades ago, about using magnets to disrupt homing pigeons ability to navigate. I wonder if magnets on the bottom of the run, right at the level of the chickens' heads, would be any sort of problem for their little brains. Just wondering...

I was just thinking of the little magnets already in the shower curtains. I wouldn't think they would be big enough to cause any damage. I was thinkinking of ease of installing & removing for reuse.

hehe we have two li'l tikes playhouses that the girls REALLY dont use...but hubby doesnt want to use them as coops..I mean WHY NOT???? save on money right??

oh and now i'm panicking thinking about my li'l towns ordinances; but I cannot find it at all ..I've googled and CANNOT find it..

I have a "city" address; but I'm on the outskirts of town; the next house is a country/rural addie...I literally have fields on 3 sides of me...<sigh>

I wish I could find it the info!! I've googled Mason City IL but no such luck...

Starting a new thread would be a better idea -- remember that people mostly do NOT read the whole thread before replying and do NOT look at the date on the first post, so most replies today will probably be to the original poster from last fall

Just phone the town hall, ask for the department that deals with building bylaws, and talk to them. You have two options. First, you could neglect to mention the chicken aspect and simply say "I want to build a shed in my backyard, what requirements are there regarding propertyline or dwelling setbacks, size limits, or building permits?"

Alternatively, if chickens are legal on your property, it owuld probably be better to specify this is about chickens, because there may be *additional* requirements such as greater setback distances.

But, really really, they get bazillions of inquiries like this, they will be able to answer you. It would help if you know what your property is zoned but if you don't they can help you figure that out.

That's the way I would go too. A shed. Sometimes there's no permit needed under a certain size. Or in Carolyn's case, call the town, move the chickens into the house, put the dogs in your chicken area and call it a dog run. I don't think you need a permit for a dog run, LOL
