Have searched this site and the 'net for answers but can't find anything. I'd like to crush a tablet and add it to water for my chicken with prolapsed vent.

Thanks!

Why would you offer calcium citrate to a chicken with a prolapsed vent?

Calcium D3 would normally be given to chickens/ducks/geese for soft shelled or thin shelled eggs.

If your chicken is suffering from a prolapsed vent you should apply preparation H, honey or sugar to help shrink the prolapse after giving her a bath to relax her muscles and gently pushing the prolapse back into her, depending upon the condition of the prolapse you may need antibiotics to aid her recovery...she should be kept isolated in a darkened area to halt her egg laying and give to treatment a chance to work.

A calcium or tums tablet can be given as treatment along with the sugar or prep H(shrinks swollen prolapsed tissue). Calcium helps to stimulate muscles to contract, which may help retract prolapse. In other animals a prolapse is often linked to low calcium levels,in hens this would make sense as they use large amounts of calcium in egg formation.

Thanks so much for your reply. I have done so much research on this I can't remember the source that recommended calcium. How can I tell when she's healed? Should I clean her butt everyday? (I'm a new chickener.)

Thank you for replying to me! When I saw all the blood on her butt this a.m. I got her out of the run ASAP. I read about the Preparation H treatment but had not heard that honey will work as well. I have lots of honey here. It's very comforting just to get replies to my questions.

FWIW, I have used calcium carbonate with D3, calcium citrate and calcium gluconate with hens that have problems passing eggs. I've read that magnesium is sometimes given, but I have no idea how much is okay to give.
