I want to get a small duck, but we live in town, would calls bother the neighbors too much? We would get it/ them as tiny babies so we wouldnt know boys or girls either

I have been told calls can be quite loud, but I have runners so I cannot say from experience. Drakes are quiet, and if you don't really want the eggs, you could consider that. A number of people are good at determining the sex of ducklings so you would know even if they are little.

Just a couple of thoughts.

Call ducks can be very noisy, the drakes aren't nearly as loud. Mating season was very loud. Mine don't make noise all the time but when they do they are loud.

Calls were originally developed to call down the wild ducks for hunters. That's why they are called "Calls". They are really loud and their voices carry.

If you must have quiet ducks, then forget about small ducks. All small ducks are loud. Get yourself a Muscovy. They have nice personalities and don't make anything but very quiet noises..

It would have to live with the chickens though. Would a male duck be okay with chickens? Someone in my area has snowy calls so i kind of want to see about getting one of them

Drakes are not quiet. They don't have the loud foghorn blast of the ducks, but they chatter a lot. So, it depends upon what you mean by quiet and what the neighbors' tolerance is for noise.

My opinion is that solitary drakes should not be kept in with chickens.

we are going to the farm with the ducks tuesday. We will decide then after hearing them if the neighbors would be bothered. I am thinking i will make them their own little seperate house from the hen house and they would run with the chickens in the run. when i am outside to watch them they can run the yard after they tame down and play in the kiddie pool. all day they will just have a water bowl. Would an hour or two of swimming each day be alright? We have stray dogs show up occasionally, so all out of run time must be closely supervised

Oh yep we have deicided on getting two! Hoping to get a boy and a girl, but it will depend on exactly how loud they are. Also would going through the girls pen and finding one that is quieter be helpful? There is supposed to be a ton of them so could we find one that doesnt talk as much do you think? Im going to start a new thread and combine my old ones and try there
