some of the books i have read about raising chickens in rural areas have highly suggested cedar. however, when i bought my chicks, the feedstore told me not to let them use it (after i had already bought a 50 lb bag!). ive watched them closely and noticed that they do not peck at or try to munch on the pine chips theyve got now. that being said i think i am going to try them on a mix of the two. our coop is built into our house so im hoping itll help keep the smell down a bit...
we have been using a blend of ceder and pine. we just cleaned the coop today and i saw the ducks eating a couple pieces of shavings, but today we just used pine because thats all we had. i didnt know ceder can be harmful
ETA: The ceder does make the coop smell relly good though! that was one reason we started using it
I worked a pet sore when I was younger. Alot of people were buying hamster, gerbils, mice etc and then coming back a couple of days later after it died. The most common factor for these deaths were cedar shavings in the cage. I would never put an animal on cedar.
