Are certain dog breeds better around chickens?

We have a mini Aussie & while they are known to be herding dogs, the only thing she prefers to herd are goats and occassionally people

She doesn't normally mess with the chickens...once in a while she lets them know they're too far up in the yard & herds them back to their coop, but she doesn't bark at them & has never been agressive towards them.

We have a purebred lab, a great dane/blue tick? mix, and a pomeranian/yorkie mix. All of them do well (now) around the chickens as they have been taught right from the beginning that these are pets- not food or game.

I had to bring the bb gun out for the lab once. Didn't shoot it- she's a wimp and ran away as soon as she saw it. My hubby shot the bb gun by the little pomeranian one time just to scare him. It worked.

The rooster will chase my little pomeranian if he gets too close to the flock.

Our rescue Rottie mix is GREAT with the chickens. We got her around 18 months old, and she never saw a chicken till two years later. She will sniff the chicks, and has helped me herd the ducks into the pen. She chased he rooster and duck one time to break up their fight, but didn't leave a mark on them. She hates any fighting- kids, birds, etc.

sorry to hear about your dog-at least you both had 12 loving, memorable, and happy years together! My suggesstion for a new little guy would be a Lab. Even though ours was a pheasant hunter, she NEVER touched our chickens. She new they were family and they got along well together. Good luck!

We have dachshunds and our one is very, very uninterested. He is more afraid of them than they are of him. Pretty sure if they looked at him he would run away. He wants nothing to do with them. Our other dachshund acts more her breed and wants to get at them. She's more aggressive. Then we have a Belgian Malinois (she is often mistaken as a German Shepard) and she just lays on the ground and watches them. I would think that a Lab would be a good dog to introduce to chickens. The only problem I see is puppies have so much energy they will chase anything just because it's fun but our Belgian learned quickly that chasing the cats for example is bad and she has stopped overall.

if you get a young puppy and train them well you shouldnt have a problem with it no matter what breed you choose to get but even the best trained dogs can sometimes turn and kill a chicken i have read to many stories on here where a dog that normally was fine around chickens suddenly killed them. its up to you on what breed you really want to get i love all breeds and one day hope to own 2 pits but that will be some time from now though. i can tell you i wont accept a pup older than 15 weeks for the most part

100 percent yes they are the best mine gaurds the adult birds sometimes but i caught she sleeping/ gauring some 4 day old chicks

Definitely don't get huskies haha.
I've got a cattle dog, and while she does okay when I'm there, I don't trust her to leave her unsupervised with my chickens.
