are chickens smart enough to hide from preditors

Yea, wise chickens will be alert to predators. We have the "untouchables", which consists of one rooster and 3 hens. This unit consists of the older chickens and the main big rooster. He's pretty alert and does the rooster thing if a hawk or other large bird flies overhead. The hens all run, and the young ones usually follow the hens.

So the answer to your question is, usually.
