Oh my goodness! Save me from these crazy folk! And pleeez, do not let me become this way! HAHAHA
When I started my indoor duck adventure, they originally were going to stay outside, and come in the sunroom at night or to play with me.... But then I moved when they were still babies to a townhouse (Out of state to have surgery), where they let me have my ducks, but they weren't too keen on them being outside (more like even though i had a privacy fence they didn't want me building a coop.) and they placed me in a townhouse with a bad backyard. Most had backyards that were completely fenced and had woods on the other side (light woods) or other buildings. My townhouse's backyard faced a bust street and was nothing but a huge hill with a huge gap at the bottom of the fence. People walking down the side walk could see in, and right where my house was, was also a high school's bus pick up... them dang kids threw their garbage constantly in my back yard...
So, feeling uneasy about them being outside, they became indoor ducks who spent a lot of time diapered in the front room who go to go to the park on a daily basis. Then when they were big enough I built them a pen in my office. When I moved back to my home state/city, I lived with my dad for awhile before I found my place and tried the outdoor thing again. I build their new pen in the garage and set up a very nice outdoor coop, run, and fenced in area for their pool... they hated it. they hated every part of it. I'd look outside the window to find Ming Mei glaring at me. She wouldn't let me pet her and they stopped listening. So when I moved, I moved their new pen indoors... And that's how the saga started. Because there were no pet supplies for indoor ducks (and diapers were so expensive!), I started making my own, invented a shoe when ming mei got bumblefoot, and then it was all over.... Now I am the go to person for everyone's indoor duck/chicken/goose/turkey/peacock/you name it's needs. lol. I don't mind... I get a lot of emails and phone calls with questions concerning keeping them indoors... Most of my experiences were trial by error but i think we got it pretty much down now. lol. We've had ducks inside for over 2 1/2 years now...
Of course now that were talking about getting married and buying a house, we'll only do so in an area that allows ducks, and will build them a magnificent sunroom ducky manor with concrete floors, a built in concrete pool with hot and cold water faucets so the water won't get too cold, and a specialized coop that will allow us to see into the coop from the kitchen and my workspace... spoiled right? I have an idea for even setting it up so that I can open a door to my workspace that will allow them to walk into a special pen and hang out inside my workspace with me while I work (that and it'd make a great brooder so we can finally get our girls a boyfriend
) so it'll be a part of the house but they will still be indoor ducks who'll get diapered and allowed to run around the house..... lol
ETA: We're all crazy and we know it... We just don't mind it anymore
