One of my young hens (about 2 years old) died yesterday from what I'm sure was ascites. I first noticed the symptoms about 2 weeks ago. Her abdomen became very bloated and she had a whiteish/yellowish substance coming out of her vent. Unfortunately, I could not afford to have her seen by a vet. Up until yesterday she was eating, drinking and free ranging with my other hens, although she was pretty lethargic and in her last couple days would just sit out in the open for long periods of time.
I have about 4 dozen eggs in the fridge that I've collected over the past 3 weeks or so. Are eggs affected by ascites? Is ascites contagious for my other hens that shared a coup with my hen before she died? I don't want to become ill by eggs I have on hand that my hen might have laid. Any input/references would be greatly appreciated!
