May be a silly question but I've noticed an egret hanging around in the mornings. We don't have a lake nearby so is it watching my free range chickens?

Only if you're a bug, reptile, or possibly a fish.
I have them land in my back 40 and walk in a straight line eating bugs. Fun to watch. I only wish they'd show up more often.

I would think if only you were a fish...

Cattle Egrets will sit on the backs of our cattle and pick bugs off. The cows just ignore them.
