I am a very new member and don't even know if we have leghorns but I can't post pictures yet so I thought I would start with this question.

We got two chicks at the feed store, they are yellow with buff feathers starting to come in on the wings. The store employees said that they were "assorted" and "sex-linked" female egg layers and that they usually get leghorns but they can't order specific breeds until later in Spring. I have matched up pictures online with leghorn chicks and they do look like them but they also look like buff orpingtons. I have read that for keeping backyard chickens, leghorns are NOT ideal because they are loud... is this true of your leghorns?

Thank you! I will post pictures in the identification forum as soon as the system deems me "not new" anymore. We have two dark chicks that we think are cochins because of their markings and feathery feet

My Pearl Leghorns are yellow with white feathers . They are 2 weeks and 8 weeks old. Could yours possibly be Buff Leghorns? I don't think a store would have those though. Your probably right when you say they are the Buff Orpingtons . I am new to raising them. I really don't know anything about them either. I have 11 of them, some brown and some are the pearls leghorns. The sex linked could be the Red Star breed. They are excellent layers. Sorry, I know I wasn't much help! I have been asking about Leghorns on the BYC also. I haven't had anyone reply yet. I don't know anything about their behavior. I know they are good layers. I hope we both find some info out! Best of luck!

So far my 13-week-old leghorns aren't noisy at all! I don't know what they'll do in the future though...

My guess if buff feathers are coming in that those are not leghorns unless they were buff leghorns (less likely). As for them being loud, I have leghorns and mine are no louder than my other chickens. Matter of fact, I'd say mine are slightly quieter. My EE's are yammering all the time and my RIR's are whiney.

Well featherz, either way I hope they are all pullets. They are all good chickens . I'd like to hear what they turn out to be if you get the chance.

We have 4 leghorns out of our 12 one year old hens and they're not noisy at all. I find them to be quite personable, defintely the most curious and bold of our flock. They were my favorite breed until recently the buff orpingtons have won me over due to their overwhelming friendliness. We also have silverlaced wyandottes and they are skittish and shy. They're all pretty happy and quiet, only really "talking" when we come out to give them treats or let them out of their run to free range. Good luck figuring out what you have!

i agree w. dobermom. leghorns are curious and friendly but a tad flighty. my exp... they are not noisy. my BO is the noisiest of all. from your description, it sounds like you have BOs or comets... pearl leghorns are solid yellow chick, thin, leggy and will soon feather in white.

LOVE LEGHORNS!

My Leghorns want the whole neighborhood to know when they've laid an egg. Other than that, they are pretty quiet. Great layers but not so great in our cold winters because of their big combs
