Are me hens Ameraucanas or Easter Eggers?

It's the hatcheries that mislabel them so often. I do believe, unless you get your ameraucana from a true breeder whose birds meet the standard, you have an easter egger.

I have one 17 week old girl who I looove. She is wonderful, and very cute with the fuzzy cheeks. Easter Eggers are just as good as any breed far as I am concerned

Did you get them from a feed store? They are frequently wrong. About a lot of things. Just 'cause they sell chickens doesn't mean they know anything about them. It's just the way it is. BUT, they aren't they only ones that do it. A lot of online hatcheries call their EEs Araucanas/Ameraucanas and people order thinking they'll get purebreds, and they're just not. They might have some waaaaaaaay back in their bloodline, but generally, you aren't going to find an Ameraucana anywhere except a breeder. Don't feel bad- you have some beautiful birds and they'll lay some pretty eggs, I'll bet.

I purchased chicks from a local feed store and was told they were Ameraucanas. From all my research on line I know that they are really EEs. Lots of feed stores and hatcherys seel EEs and call them Ameraucanas. It seems to get the real Auracanas or Ameraucanas you have to go to a breeder. Personally I dont care. My chickens are pretty and friendly. Yours are very pretty as well. I'm just looking forward to green eggs. or other colored eggs. In case of one of my hens who is at least 7 months and has yet to lay, any egg will due.

The feed store labels the birds what the hatchery tells them to. Hatcheries refuse to acknowledge that they are not breeding a true Ameraucana. The trouble is that most folks get them to have blue eggs and many EEs lay pink/brown since they are not bred to any standard.

Please pardon my ignorance, but how can you tell by looking at them that they are easter eggers?

There are recognized colors in ameraucanas and there is no color standard for ee's you can tell these are EE's because of there color and there legs. I bred ameraucanas for a year or so they are very different there is also something about the type of the birds that is different can't put my finger on it though.

I think many people (many feed store owners included) think that EE and Ameraucanas are one and the same which unfortunately causes confusion for people buying the chicks. We love our little EE`s and have just inherited what we hope are 3 blue Ameraucanas...they may be X`s and join the ranks of EE but we love them all just the same.
This thread has lots of great info for learning about the differences and the breed standards from other BYC members

yeah speaking of feed store....I was waiting on my chicks to arrive from cackle and got anxious so i went to one and asked what kind they had in the bin.....he said oh the lighter color is a white rock and the yellow is RIR well guess what they are redsexlinks/red stars....oh well....my only regret is that i have 3 different types of hybrid layers so i cannot breed to get more...I didn't realize when i got them...o well i did get a trio of buff silkies from a breeder nearby so i can get more of them

Easter Eggers, very beautiful, and very good layers (most of them anyway). I have about 10 that are almost 4 months old and another 20 to 24 pullets coming up that are a tad over 4 weeks.
