hello everybody, for the past few days ive been watching my buff orpingtons, they are about 9 months old, and theyll go into their nesting boxes and lay an egg and sit there for a very long time, ive been watching the barred rocks and and all my other hens and they all go lay their egg and theyll sit for 2-3 minutes tops and jump out and continue on with their daily activities. even when i remove the eggs from under the buff orpingtons theyll sit for about 2 hours and then i guess realize there is no eggs under them anymore and get off the nest. when i try to take their eggs they puff up and make that sound as if they are broody and peck at my hands, but my other hens dont do this at all they let me take their eggs with no problems at all. is this a sign of them beginning to go broody? or are they already broody? i dont know what to think of this because spring has begun and i heard chickens usually go broody in the spring when the weather starts warming up. please let me know what you think!!

Sound broody. The way to know for sure is if they stay in there 24 hours a day except for a brief daily foray to defecate, eat and drink.
If they go to roost at night, they're not broody.

I would get some fake eggs or golf balls to test their actual broodiness. You don't want them to get eggs started then abandon them. A true broody hen will keep her butt on that nest almost 24-7.

i had some golf balls under them but i removed them dont ask me why :( but when i took the golf balls away they pecked my hands and i dropped them and they both quickly put the golf balls back under themselves to sit on.

Well if they stay on them for a day or two, and stay on them at night, you can probably go ahead and put eggs under them.

I've also got 1 that is thinking about being broody. I ordered some eggs that I wanted. I figure that by the time they get here I'll know for sure if I can put them under her or if they should go in the incubator.

Some Easter Eggers. We have 2 that we got as chicks in the fall. They both turned out to be boys. So, no colorful eggs for us. We'll try again.
ive heard that if you breed any hens to easter eggers, the girls of that cross would lay green or blue eggs because the colored egg trait is dominant. why dont you just hatch out your own easter eggers with the roosters?
