So I have five 13 week old chickens. We let them out most of the day to roam around the backyard but keep an eye on them because we’re worried about predators like hawks. Lately I’ve been noticing my chickens will chase small brown birds that land in the yard, which is just kind of funny and cute to me I guess. But the other day a red tailed hawk landed on our fence and was staring at the chickens. He was about the size of our smallest chicken. And our chickens chased after him! Aren’t they supposed to have instincts to run away from hawks?? Why are my girls doing this? Now I’m afraid to not be outside with them when they free roam if they’re going to run towards the hawks! Lol

They are babies, without adults to show them how to behave. It must have been funny, though. Probably a young hawk, too, who was as surprised as you were. He'll likely be hungry next time, so I'd keep my chicks in for a while.
