Are my chicks dying

I brought my day old BRs home yesterday. I'm using the Premier Chick Brooder plate. I had to put one chick under the plate then the rest followed. I used a heat lamp last year and it was a pain. The brooder is excellent. The chicks seem calmer and less crazy. Ditch the heat lamp and just go with the brooder plate. The wee ones come out and eat, drink & poop then go back under the plate to warm up. You'll be fine.

Unfortunately, one of my little chicks passed away yesterday evening. It was pretty sudden. Not sure what was going on. All 4 were doing their usual and were very lively. Later in the afternoon I noticed this one wasn't wanting to leave the brooder plate. I moved her to the food dish and she nibbled a bit then went back to the brooder plate. She just stayed there in a half squat nodding and napping. Then she just passed. The remaining 3 seem OK. I hope they are going to make it.

Sorry to hear you lost one.

Yes I think they’re pretty tough too.
We tend to compare baby chicks to mammals like cats and dogs that have a mother that feeds and cares for them.
But it’s common to lose a few chicks here and there.
I think some of them have something wrong internally and they fail to thrive after a certain point.
That’s happened to me several times.
I recently lost an Orpington chick at a week old.
All the others were fine.
