I have five cochins and three faverolles I got them all from MCmurray last spring they are five months old yesterday. Just wondering what quality they are and what needs to be better on them. I know most of them are not show quality but want to know if they are worth breeding or not.

The Faverolles are all girls

This is BuckBeak a few months ago I posted pics and everyone said girl but I am not sure about this one. He took forever to grow in his back feathers and still is not very pretty.Suppose to be Silver Laced.

There are two black ones They look almost the same I forgot to take pics of both of them. The other one is a little smaller but looks the same otherwise. We ordered Blue but got these.

Rouge is a Splash Cochin (suppose to be blue) We didn't get any actual blue ones.

This one doesn't have a name she is Silverlaced I think she is very pretty but she isn't as soft and fluffy as Rouge and the black ones are.

Thanks

It depends on what you're breeding for. They are definitely birds that could be worked with and improved upon, most birds are.

If I were you, I'd get a copy of the APA standard for each and choose the birds that best match up with the standard to breed from. You'll have to be very selective if your eventual goal is to have a show quality line.

Buckbeak has very poor lacing, and very poor leg/foot feathering. I would not use him in a breeding program (if you're wanting good quality cochins).

Good luck!

Some of the cochins don't look too bad, but the faverolles aren't great and if you're looking to breed to the standard, I'd suggest getting some better quality ones

Thats what I thought. Is buckbeak a rooster or a hen? IF its a rooster I will just get rid of him or butcher him but if its a hen it can stay in my just layer flock.

I wouldn't show or breed any of those, personally. It'd take years to get anything show quality, you'd be better off finding an actual breeder that has good quality birds and getting eggs or birds from them. Your birds are pretty and good for layers or lawn ornaments, but as far as quality go, they are typical "hatchery quality", sorry.

Your faverolles remind me of my old hen, very pretty

I agree...Faverolle's aren't good quality and the cochins don't have the leg-feathering down the toes that they should have. Very pretty egg-layers though.

As for Buckbeak (LOVE the name! HP all the way!), I'd wait a bit longer before deciding. Cochins mature later than most breeds and can take longer to determine if it's a male or a female.

You've gotten good responses for the most part. If breeding for show or breed preservation/improvement is your goal I'd suggest you start over. I assume these are hatchery birds & are about what to expect from most hatcheries. They're identifiable as the breed but that's about all.
If you're interested in showing remember it doesn't cost any more to raise a good bird than it does to raise a bad one.
