Are peanuts safe for chickens to eat??

My daughter just bought a bag of treats for our chickens that have shelled peanuts in it. Are peanuts safe for them to eat? I have been unable to find any info on this.

I bought a large bag of animal grade peanuts earlier this year and give them a handful now and then as a treat. They enjoy them and I've observed no ill effects.
