I was going to get a Blue Andalusian and then I read that they can be particularly noisy. Does anyone know if this is true? Are certain breeds of hens really noisier? I love all the sounds chickens make but I don't know if my neighbors do. I live in a suburban tract so if there are certain breeds that are noisier than others, I'd like know what they are.

Thank you so much.

Some breeds are indeed louder than others. I am not sure what breeds went into making my EEs, but those 2 girls are louder than the rest of my 15 hens put together. I've always had birds that are pretty quiet, so it has been an adjustment getting used to the constant racket from the EEs.

I can't tell you which breeds are known for being loud, though. Sorry.

Good luck.

yup-deffinitely some are noisier. I have some hens that just lay an egg and you'd never know it-I have a few hens ( BO's) that announce it to the world and if they had a megaphone they'd use that too!

This site has a good run down of chicken breeds and their typical personalities including noisyness. I can't speak from experience, but based on everything I have ready silkies are by far the quietest birds. If you want layers, though, you might consider an Ameraucana.

Typically the loudest girls I have had have all been white egg-layers. After a little research I have found that more than half of the White eggers are considered both noisy and almost a fourth were either agressive or flighty or both. I have brown eggers and if I were to recommend a breed it would be Red-Sex Links. They are calm and docile, not a bit agressive and are fairly a quiet, self-reliant breed. The hens will produce eggs at 22 weeks and the roosters are ready to eat at 25 weeks (both Black and Red). The Blue And. you are after are very pretty birds with excellent egg laying ability and potiental. However, in my experiance they are afriad of humans to the point of injuring themselves to get away and so noisy that my friends and I re-homed ours within two-weeks but these hens were adult when we got them. The flighty issue can be avioded by handleing them as chicks regularly but the noise is a very real issue with this breed and I speak from experiance. If you want to avoid angry neighbors then I would try the Sex-Links. If you are looking for a white egger that is quiet Sebrights and Minorcas are considered the quietest of the white egger group (this is not counting ornamental breeds that lay white eggs like the Sumatra and D'Celle that are also quiet chickens)

I hope this helps!

Best of luck to you and your new flock!

I don't know about other breeds, and as a new chicken owner, I'm not that experienced, but my 28 week old RIRs are really noisy. Especially in the morning, when one lays an egg, they all start the egg song.

We also had Blue A's we acquired as an adult trio. Captain Insano and his lovely ladies, Beserko and Nobraino, would indeed harm themselves to keep away from humans. Left to themselves they were excellent foragers, gorgeous birds, and wow, they would LAY SOME EGGS! I hatched plenty thinking that with handling and human experience that the chicks would settle down. I am relieved to say we have now sold our last trio. If someone is going to tame this breed they better be able to keep them close and really handle them *every* *single* *day*. Even then I have my doubts. The rooster was very virile and crowed incessantly (not an issue where we are, and I didn't mind that). Hens were talkers, but again, that wasn't my particular issue with them.
My black australorps and orpingtons are lovely, quiet ladies as were our wyandottes. Just sold the last of the adults of that breed also, but through no fault of their own.
My silkie roos never quit crowing, but the girls seem to be very quiet.

My black australorps are by far the loudest and most talkative of all my girls. They screech at full throttle and always have something to say. They will come right up to me and talk and we have a whole conversation with each other:) I love them though; they are gentle and friendly. One of my favorites along with my EEs.
