I know this is crazy, but hear me out. I have chickens that lay dark brown eggs, and they are always smooth and shiny. but back in the day when I bought the cheapest brown eggs from the store they always felt chalky to the touch. I thought it was weird, and that they might have been dyed, but didn’t investigate further and forgot about it until today. This morning I collected a brown egg from my mystic maran and as I was marveling at how beautiful and smooth it felt, my memory of the mystery of the chalky brown egg was triggered.

Dyed? or is it just the washing process?

Eggs seem to be laid matte, or glossy. Meaning with heavy bloom or not. Eggs that are matte get cold and moisture gets on the egg, can make an egg feel chalky.
