Are there any Chicken to Human transferrable illnesses?

We eat eggs so frequently in this house that they're gone before I could possibly have time to enjoy the color of the egg, lol!   I have to admit though...your egg carton contents certainly are pretty! I'd like to have an easter egger but since I'm limited to 6 hens total, I just can't have all the ones I'd like to have.  If that were the case I'd have 32. lol!

I'm about ready to pick a different breed to replace my Golden Lakenvelder hen-dream though...because I'm striking out on that one every single time.   I had the opportunity to get a 6 mo healthy rooster, but we can't have roosters here so that opportunity "flew the coop" so to speak.

I'm thinking I may go Jubilee instead.

As a side note---anyone know how to get a fever down? I'm sitting at 103.4 now (stupid thing keeps going up) and Tylenol and warm showers aren't doing anything thus far...my eyeballs feel like they're going to blow out the front of my face though!:tongue
I hate fevers.. I feel like I'm going out of my mind when I get them.. Last time I had one, I wrapped myself in a wet towel and shivered for 30 minutes and my temp actually dropped a degree. :idunno

Well..I did try your method and the only thing it ended up doing was the first part (shivering for 30 minutes). lol The good news is that it's after midnight and it's now 103.1 so it's gone down a *tad*. The bad news is I can't sleep because I lay down and can't breathe at all the second my head hits the pillow. This is nasty stuff! I'm 36 and I don't think I've ever had this kind of junk...it's a whole new breed of "Yuck" (to me).

As an adult, a fever of 103 is high. Please go see your doctor. Get someone to drive you if needed. My son had a high fever last summer with flu symptoms and he ended up with a bad case of mono. He was in the hospital for a week on antibiotics. Even developed hepatitis from the mono. Hope you feel better very quickly!

that's a high fever! I'd go in if it doesn't come down...and it definitely sounds like the flu.

To answer the original question a little further, you can get all sorts of bacteria, fungus, and parasites from chickens. Most if not all of these can be prevented by washing your hands after handling your birds and wearing a mask while you work with the shavings/poop. I've had mine for two years though and have never gotten anything from them.

Most people here on the forums are just so very sweet. Thank you for your concern, but I am okay. It's 102.3 now...much better. I still can't lay down because my chest is full of gunk. I'll try again when I'm 100% exhausted. This too shall pass!

I'm SO glad I didn't get it from the hatching eggs though...that seriously had me a bit freaked out for quite a while. I'm pretty well assured now that it's just a bug that's going around. Someone, somewhere, probably sneezed in aisle 4 and I caught it in aisle 10 (because my luck is great like that!)

Remember that chest colds CAN turn into something warrenting a doctor (pneumonia or bronchitis) - I am prone to Bronchitis, so as soon as I feel chest involvement, I go to the doctor. Bronchitis can turn into pneumonia if you don't get antibiotics to treat it.

Glad your fever is going down. Somehow being feverish makes every other symptom 10x worse.

I'm so sorry you are ill. aoxa is right, even viruses can turn bacterial if they go on too long. As far as your question about reducing fever, you may get better results if you alternate tylenol with ibuprofen. Cool compresses to the forehead, axilla, and groins might help as well. I missed how long you've been sick, but if this continues past a few days without improvement please call your doctor to be seen. Keep your fluids up, you don't want to dehydrate. I hope you feel better.

Please feel better and try the wet towel again. Good luck with your eggs! I have never gotten anything from handling eggs. I always sanitize my hands for the safety of the chicks.
