Are there any cons against dirt floors?

So the hardware cloth goes down from the coop frame and then out on the sides - like an L shape all around?

We were talking about the trench idea last night, and thought that we could dig it 18" down and out. Does that sound reasonable? I see the sense it attaching it under the coop frame...

And definitely heavy-duty staples. Though they're a pain to pull out...
