I have noticed a difference in the predatory behavior between Malamutes and GSD's. If you catch the Malamute in the act of attacking livestock chances are he will come bouncing over to you and invite you to join in the "fun". When the GSD is caught red handed he knows what he is doing is wrong and he heads for the hills. Some GSD livestock attacks I have seen were herding instincts gone awry, and in some cases the dogs were bent on pure mayhem. A few weeks ago a friend of mine went out to do chores one morning and as he went to open the barn door he saw a GSD covered with blood come flying out a high window. What saw when he entered the barn still gives him nightmares. Dead and dying goats were everywhere. That dog was out to kill. He was not trying to herd anything. The sad thing is my friend had locked the goats in the barn to protect them. He never dreamed any dog would even try to gain entry through that window. It was a good eight feet from the ground.
