yesterday we found two of our chickens dead, we more then suspect our little dog was able to get into the coup and do the deed ( a problem we will fix) they were probably dead any where from 3-6 hours, we put them in our garage fridge and plan to clean and pluck today or tomorow, my husband say's theyll be just fine but I'm a little worried since they had been out for a few hours and were attacked. btw... there isn't any huge trauma they are intact. does anyone have an idea about this? thanks

Hmmmmm, I think I would process them to be fed to the dog. Or let your hubby eat them. I don't think I would, unless I had to.....

anytime you do not know the exact reason for death, eating them is a slight risk. You could cook the heck out of them in a stew, that should kill any bacteria that might cause harm. I probably wouldnt eat them myself but that is because i have never processed a chicken!

Personally, no, I would not eat them. They went 3-6 hours kill to even the beginning of chill. Because they weren't dressed it took substantially longer than that to get their internal temperature down.

Could you kill anything they're likely to be carrying? Sure, cook them long enough and hot enough and you'll be fine. But why? As a good friend of mine once said, my body is not a garbage disposal.

If I had KNOWN that it was a dog kill, and they weren't too mangled, I'd probably eat them. Then again, some animals are supposed to be bled out, and I'm not 100% sure which ones (I just know that venison is fine without being bled out and pig is not, though pig doesn't have to be rested after butcher either).

Would you die from them? Most likely not. In all likelihood, they'd be fine to eat- but I would absolutely get rid of them. I wouldn't eat anything I didn't kill, especially if I FOUND it dead.
