Are these holes too big for adult quail

Im turning a shoe rack into a quail house and im not sure if these gaps are too big, theyre 2-2 1/2 iinches spaced apart, im just holding them with tape atm incase I want to adjust them. Although I dont want to use chicken wire mesh I will if these gaps are too big, as well as to keep rats out because a rat killed my bantam chicken.

I think the gaps are too big. Quail can escape, and rats and weasels can enter, and coons can reach in and grab birds. I'd go with hardware cloth.

Way too big. I love the idea for using the shoe rack, but you'll need to secure open areas with hardware cloth.

I'm trying to remember who had this idea, but she uses baking cooling racks as doors since they're already about the right size. I'm planning to borrow that idea for my next build.

Agreed, a quail could run through that at top speed!
