I bought 4 birds at a chicken sale and thought I was getting 1 roo and three hens. Some of the tail feathers were missing and it looked like the result of pecking. I brought them home and quarantined but as their feathers are growing back I suspect at least 3 of them are Roos. The apparent roo is lighter in color and has all the visible markings. He crows. The other three appear to be around the same age and are slightly darker in color. No eggs laid yet, but no crowing either. Can anyone confirm my suspicions... I think I see saddle feathers emerging in two of the darkest ones. The third appears to have rounder, fluffy feathers (next to last pic) Also, are these considered lavender or blue and what possible breed... not round and fluffy enough to be Orpington.
Do you know if they are all the same variety? If so, I do think the others are hens based on their wattles and combs, both of which are much smaller than the rooster's. From these photos, the tail feathers also look more hen-ish to me. Orpingtons are often fluffy, but I have had one or two be leaner, especially while still on the younger side, but hopefully someone with more experience in identification will come along and answer.
agreed, 1 roo and 3 hens. The lavender color can have this gene for fraying feathers which I think is what is going on with your hens. I think it can be corrected with new blood brought into the line, but I'm not sure. You'd have to do more research on the matter. It is discussed a little bit in this article. https://poultrykeeper.com/poultry-breeding/the-lavender-gene/
Also, the lavender orpington is usually thinner than the typical english style orpington. It is a pure bred orpington pullet in my avatar, younger than your birds.
