Just clip their flight feathers and they won't go nowhere. Doesn't hurt and takes about 5 minutes.

mallards need to stretch their wings to stay in "flight shape". Mine are 8 weeks old today, we released them on my 4.5 acre pond last thursday. They are able to fly across the pond a few feet off the water but have not built up the strength to gain much altitude, and their wing feathers aren't quite as long as they will be. It's fun watching all 22 of them take off running on the water than get a few feet in the air. They are really enjoying all the bugs and seeds around the pond.
