Thank you @Alliesan648 and @lbgreenfield for the info! That’s what I suspected about DE and its lack of effectiveness.yes Exactly!
And I wanted to add, get the nest boxes reallllly good, that poor broody is probably getting chewed all day long.
I’ve been at war with these buggers all summer long, it’s exhausting. I’ve even painted and then siliconed All the gaps in the floor.. sigh
I don’t have the spray version of permethrin, but I do have the powder version. I sprinkled it throughout the coop- on the roosts, in the nest boxes, throughout the bedding- yesterday. We’ve had consistent rain and thunderstorms here for the last two days so I haven’t had a chance to take out the pine shaving bedding yet (which I’d just replaced a week ago so it’s fairly new...ugh) Once the rain stops, I’ll be able to go in, take out all the contaminated bedding, really get in there with the permethrin powder, and give each bird a good bath + dusting. I may decide to get the liquid permethrin if the powder version doesn’t suffice (like you mentioned, to get into every nook and cranny in the coop) but this is what I’ll use for now.
I will say, the powder permethrin is a pain in the rear to use because of all the precautions- having to wear gloves, a mask so I don’t breathe it in, having to wear a different pair of shoes to avoid tracking it into the yard and into my house (we have cats so wouldn’t want them to come into contact with it). Ugh. Wish me luck, and again thank you for the info!!
