Are these wild baby turkeys? Found by the road.

No, Turkey is not the breed. It is the common name of the species.

Narragansett or Bronze would be a breed.
Look it up. The APA only recognizes one breed and that is Turkey. All domestic turkeys and wild turkeys other than Ocellated turkeys are the genus species Meleagris gallopavo. They differ only in the subspecies.

The breed Turkey is broken down into varieties. The APA recognizes 8 varieties such as Bronze and Narragansett. There are many more varieties than the 8 recognized.

The term breed is used differently for chickens and dogs and cattle. The proper usage of the term breed is specific to the animal or bird that it is being used for. It is appropriate to classify the breed as Turkey because of how closely all turkeys are related including being from the same haploid group. They are much more closely related to each other than chickens are to each other.

A good example of how closely turkeys are related is that if you breed a Bronze tom to a Narragansett hen, all the offspring will be Bronze. All of the female offspring will be pure Bronze because a Narragansett hen cannot pass her single Narragansett gene on to her female offspring. All the males will be Bronze carrying a hidden Narragansett gene because it takes two Narragansett genes for the trait to be shown in male turkeys.

Porter's Rare Heritage Turkeys is an excellent place to learn about turkeys.

I'm kinda confused, I decided to look into some stuff. People around here own turkeys that definitely look like bronze turkeys, even tractor supply sells them. Bronze turkeys are legal here. It is illegal to own wild bronze turkeys but legal to own captive breed bronze turkey, both are domestic.
Wild bronze turkeys here are just called meleagris gallapavo here or wild turkey and are not addressed by breed.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
I have a few relatives that work in fish and game here so I'll ask them in the morning.

Every state has its own rules. Game and Fish employees don't talk about turkey breeds. They only deal with wild turkeys. They don't even refer to them as Bronze but that is their color.

Meleagris gallopavo is the genus species for wild turkeys and all domestic turkeys. They differ at the subspecies level.

"The North American wild turkey species is called the Meleagris gallopavo, but that grouping is broken down into five sub-species; Eastern, Osceola, Merriam, Gould, and Rio Grande. Their territories range from most of North America, (Eastern wild turkey), to extremely regional, (Osceola and Gould wild turkey)"

As a former Game & Fish employee, it is my experience that G&F employees are not well versed in turkey terminology.

The color for Bronze turkeys and the color for wild turkeys is Bronze. Both are (bb) for their color gene.

Broad Breasted Bronze, heritage Bronze and wild turkeys are all Meleagris gallopavo. They are all (bb) for their color.

In the genus species, they all 3 differ at the subspecies level, not at the genus species level.

Can they be told apart?
