i have 19 hens for 1 rooster . my hens however look scruffy and are missing some butt feathers i have put aprons on the ones that are sparce on the behind. i have just trimed my rooster spures down also . if they are molting what should i feed them and do i also need to worm them?
they are laynig about 10-13 eggs a day.
to day i gave them pinto beans and lentals cooked also scratch, black oiled sunflower seeds and they always have laying mash in the feeder. please help !!! l

If it is the roo, then it's more from his claw than from his spurs. I've been thinking of send my roo to the eternal hot-tub... He does quite a number on our hens, even with saddles.

If it was molting, then I would expect your egg production would be lower than it sounds like it is.

thanks Nemo
i think you are right !

the sad part is that i have had this rooster since he was hatched. i had a batum hen that sat on 10 regular size eggs and tried to hatch then her self. then a reg size hen came along and sat with her. belive me it was the strangest thing. they only hatched out this one chick .since the only male i had in the flock at the time was a batum rooster i was surprised to see this little chick:jumpy. he had 2 moms and they both took care of him and the larger one had both the chick and the batum hen under her wings. he about 7 years old can i clip his nails? chicken pedacuire

Sure you could clip his nails but they might be sharper then. I guess you could try clipping and then filing or dremmeling them? Is that a word? Maybe one of those dog nail grinder thingies would work?
