Are they really hens?

Realize the OP only got those birds 6 weeks ago. I suspect the age of 20 wks is a bit off for those.

I must say, still shaking head over nobody paying any attention to the red feathers coming up on the b/w one plus him and the bearded one with big comb having the thinner, pointy roo feathers on necks. The birds being younger would fit with the roosters showing combs and why the other pullets are so young looking and nowhere near laying within a week or two.
I was looking again and thinking you're probably right, and the age is more like 3-4 months. That fits so much better.

Your very very right

Could we get a pic of their saddle feathers with your hand underneath some of the feathers?
Roosters Mature at their own age, some crow at 10 weeks, some crow at 24 weeks. Those who hear a big Roos crow are more likely to try sooner.
While a few more pics would be nice, it's a rooster ~>

I pointed out the lower sickle feather, the red, and how his tail feathers are starting to curve downward

My hen, a week or 2 within the OPs roo. Pointed out her girly features.

There is a wide range of developemnt, I have two ages at the moment and they are very different in maturity. If the age is widely different from 20 weeks then that could change my view, but the OP say's 20 so I worked with the info given.

20 week old RIR, very little comb and wattles.

20 week old BA hatched the same day, and she is ready to lay. We thought she would have started a week or so ago, but it's winter here and she has been a bit slow off the mark. Our two L/S's are somewhere in the middle.

Our two roo's are 15 weeks, been crowing for at least 2-3 weeks, the other four roo's we had were crowing before them, same age. Hackle and saddle feathers are very shiny and evident, have been for about 2 weeks now.

I have seen the red feathers Kev is talking about, and if he is right about the age then I could be wrong. If the OP is right about age, then 5 month old rooster has been very patient to fly under the radar this long.

Excellent post, with pictures to boot. It is all the things you pointed out I'm seeing as roo signs. For me the total 'clincher' are the red feathers showing up in the pyle zones- from experience that's common on cockerels from silver birds bred with gold birds.
